if you are talking about consolidation loans then previous answers have dealt with ti, but....

i think you mean "there is a little known piece of government legislation that allows you to write off xxx% of your debt and be debt free after only 60 months".

its called an IVA, it is little known legislation because it has loads of caviats, such as the majority of your creditors have to agree to it, you still pay something every month, if you get an inheritance, guess where it goes,

and of course a lot of the less scrupiless companies charge excessive handling fees to do it. which is why they want you to do it.

I take it you are talking about CCCS (url below)?

They are a charity organisation and give free help and counselling to people with debts.

I do know a number of people they have helped, and its well worth giving them a call.

Don't know about them , but you could always try citizens advice , they are very helpful

Under government help? What is that supposed to mean? Ask them what they can do to reduce the governments debt. Demand that they send you the information in the mail. I'd be very skeptical and under no circumstances should you reveal your S.S. or credit card numbers.

The only two programs I can think of is credit counseling and bankruptcy. Although, credit counseling is not a government program.
A few years back, I heard something similar advertised on t.v. It was about a federal law that helped reduce debt to $13 mo. (est.). Needless to say, at the time I was very interested in this. Come to find out, it was bankruptcy! I quickly changed my mind.

I assume you are asking about those "get out of debt" consolidation companies. If so, then NO there is no such thing. Most of those state they are a non-profit organization but in reality are not! I had used CCCS back in 1997, but when I kept asking for a statement to show who and what they paid, they kept jerking me around. I finally had to get a lawyer to request one. After reviewing the statement, I saw that they paid very little out but yet got their monthly fee first and some of the accounts were over the 30 day past due limit. So I dropped them and paid everybody myself and finally got caught up.

Also there is no such thing as a Government Grant to pay off debts!

The closest you can get to it would be those organizations (debt consolidation) firms that are recommended by the Federal Trade Commission.

Here is a link to locate one in your state.

the catch is they are not under government and they are genuine however they make your credit worse so they can negotiate and then they charge you for what you can do free yourself

If you look at something like debtcleared.co.uk, they get someone to call back and explain all the different options and what they mean. You don't have to go ahead with anything or put credit card details in or anything like that. I know a few people who have done this and it's helped them get on top of things.

The government does not help you to reduce debt. They will, however, give you grants for various bills depending on the program you apply for...not an easy thing to get. If a company is telling you they are backed by the government, they are most likely trying to steal your money. Beware.

Check out Matthew Lesko's books about government help. They are $40 at Barnes & Noble, and they have thousands of valid ways to get government money to help you with your bills.

Hope this helps.
