Has anyone been through credit card identity fraud?!?
I just got notified that there has been a $10,000 cheque withdrawal out of my mastercard that I never made!!! Luckily the bank stopped it. I just want to know how I can protect myself in the future and if anyone else has experienced this terrible incident

Yes, I have. First of all never assume the credit card companies protect you. Check your credit reports atleast once per year for any potential fraud. Second, always make sure your creditiors or account holders have up to date contact information. That way if they suspect fraud the can contact you and stop the situation immediately. If someone has tried to commit fraud on your account. Change the account number ASAP, they will try again. Have the credit card company send you a new card with a different number. If you do not have one already, get a locking mailbox. This is how most credit card checks are stolen. Thevies open your mail box and take what they want. Once you are a confirmed victim of identity theft file a police report, contact the credit bureaus, and if you live in the US file a report with the federal trade commision. Sounds like so far you have gotten lucky.

Do you have your card on you? Did you lose it recently?

That doesn't sound like identity theft to me since it was withdrawn out of YOUR mastercard, and a new card hasn't been set up in your name. Did you give out your card information in a telephone call or through a phishing e-mail?

What you need to do is contact MasterCard and tell them to lock your account so no one may make purchases out of it.

Also, never, ever give out your Social Security Number over the telephone or through an e-mail.

call the credit agencies
(you only need to call one and they will notify the others)
put a FRAUD ALERT on your account
File a police report
that will entitle you to a copy of your credit report for free and you can monitor it to see if any other charges or accounts were opened in your name.
Also make sure there are no new addresses added to your account! (they might be getting mail sent to another location with your name on it)
If you have not done so already have the old card reissued with a new number...
It did happen to me but fortunately my thief was someone that I knew and they were not very smart...He lived in the neighborhood and he and his buddies were stealing mail out of the mailboxes while the rest of the people in the neighborhood were at work. He was apparently observed by the mailman in the act after some things were missing and reported to the post office. The prosecutor had other more serious charges on this person for other stuff that was more serious so he was not even prosecuted for mine. GRRRR
He did spend a few years in jail (for other like styled stuff) but I still wonder what happened to the 'stuff' he acquired.
At that time, my credit card had a $50.00 liability on it but because this guy was so stupid, they even waived that.
The credit card company (it was capital one) was great which is unbelievable because they are so crappy in every other aspect of services

intellectual dude
Someone once used my identity to get a phone line in L.A. where I lost my wallet while visiting. I had to prove that I wasn't living there and so I didn't have to pay it.

Still it makes me mad that someone would steal my wallet and do something like that. I wanted to find out who it was.

I went through this about 18 months ago.

1)Call all credit card companies, notify them and have them re-issue accounts with different numbers
2)Notify your bank and have them re-issue account
3)Notify credit bureaus and place a fraud alert on the account

Good luck, at least they caught it, mine put 12k through before anything happened!

yes....and very little.....scams happen all the time, a few hints....cover you pin when withdrawing money at any ATM.....don't use your credit cards...over the Internet...That's a tough one, The other thing you can do is put a fraud protection alert on your credit report. That's what I did and it helped somewhat, but crooks are always figuring out way to scam people.

I've been through it. I've had my identity stolen. It was a real cluster. After a year, I'm OK with the bank, completely. HOWEVER, I'm still getting many calls from collection agencies. I rebuilt my credit. I don't know how it happened. Thieves are getting real high tech. Good luck.

sign up for life lock and they insure you up to one million dollars, and its worth it cause id theft is the hardest thing to get out from under and it still goes bad on your credit even if you prove it. But Life Lock can fix that.

american girl
use credit cards that are pre-paid.
