Has anyone ever had a car saleman lie to them about their credit score?
I'm not sure how commen this is. I am 100% sure that all 3 of my credit scores are over 720. Just checked in online today, plus my mortage broker showed me the reports a few weeks ago when he pulled it. When they ran my credit yesterday at the car dealrship I was told my score were in the mid 600s and was going to have to pay a additonal premium. i told him thats not possible and that my mortgage broker just ran the scores and they in the 700s. He put on hold for 5 mins and then said his "manager" said they could waive the fee..

Did this not sound like complete a rip off to you? Is this commen.
Additional Details
Of course i know car salesmen are lying pricks. I just didnt they they messed with people about there credit scores. Seems that it would be to easy for them to get in trouble over that.

It is common. He didn't give you an exact score, did he? They are very sneaky with their tactics! Check out Daveramesy.com, he has some interesting tips on buying a car!

Have you ever heard of a car salesman who tells the truth ?

Get your own financing, not at the dealership - unless it's one of those subsidized loans by the manufacturer for a new or certified used car.

They were just trying to make a few extra bucks.

Actually Iceman under the Federal Privacy Act it's illegal for a sales person to even know your score, interest rate or monthly payments.

These are only disclosed once you are at the dealership and they have verified that you are who you say you are.

As you know the credit bureaus that dealers and auto lenders are not the same as the ones you get on line or that mortgage companies look at. Dealers and auto lenders see the "Auto enhanced" versions which are normally better for the customer because they are weighted in favor of your installment credit, so if anything your scores should have been higher not lower.

Don't believe anything a sales person tells you, only talk to the Finance Manager about such things. They are the only ones that can legally discuss this with you.

O.B.T.W. I have never lied to one of my customers.

I have to agree with what everyone's saying, he just wanted to make some extra money on top for himself. What a prick.

Of course he lied.
What else is new?

It's been done before - it's been done to you - and it will be done again.

WHAT??? A car salesman lie???

Of course it was a scam. I would have told them No Thank You after they said they would waive the fee. They proved they are liars, and I would not have given them my business.

They will add on fees everywhere they can. I even tell them to not put the dealer nameplate on the car. They charge you for it, and you are paying them to advertise for them!

buttsnake
Dont think its happend to me.

But I would not put that past any car salesmen.

How much was the premium they were going to charge?

When dealing with a car salesman it's best to follow the old saying: "If their lips are moving, they are lying".
You should have a copy of your own credit report and score BEFORE going in. Here is where you can get it:

Ice man i am not ion his side but i work in mortgage and i can tell you that having your credit pulled many time in a short period in different industries Will drop your scores significantly,

i say this because the federal government has a rule that has to be fallowed by all the agencies used for credit polling it goes as fallows,

any credit pull inside the same industry will effect your score once every 15 days, at that time your score will recover but not until 15days after the original pull non effective period expires, so 30 days, before you get the lost points back

each pull may effect your score as much as 15 points, per applicable industry,

this means that if in a 30day period you have your mortgage broker pull your scores, You may lose up to 10 points, Then you have a car dealer pull the next week, you may lose up to 10 more points, and then a personal pull (weather they tell you or not ) may effect you with an additional 10 points, because that's 3 different industries pulling your credit, and you have lost 30points I.E. a 720 score drops to a 690,

so taking that into consideration wait 30-45 days prior to purchasing your vehicle, and your scores will have recovered and you should be fine :)

Cali Girl
I am sure they lie, but to charge you an additional charge? They couldn't do that even if they wanted to. I would have asked to see my score.

I ran my credit on friday and went on sunday to get a new car. The dealer that ran my credit told me that it was higher by 9 point for the time I ran it. So, I don't think that they go up of down as fast as the sales man claimed
