It's all totally unnecessary. All debt problems can be solved. You can only be imprisoned for not paying your tax. |

Nope, I have absolutely no debt. I refuse to get a credit card. |

Uh, they don't have debtors prison anymore. But yes, I've been there. I ended up filing chapter seven after months of actually contemplating suicide because of how horrible my debt became. I lost my job and have been unable to find another one which is how it happened. But yeah, there are a lot of people out there. |

I think you just have to come out with it, get an IVA set up, so some third party will negotiate with the creditors, my ex husband was in huge debt and he did this, it stopped the threatening letters, and they negotiated only what he was able to pay then after a couple of years they wrot about £30k off. he can't get a mortgage or credit now but he has a nice rented flat, a part time job, and no credit facilities but enough to live on each month and save a little. I think the record is cleared after a few years anyway so he can apply for credit again when he is in a better position. As long as you don't pay a company to do this, beware there are those out there who make even more money out of those already in debt. Choose carefully, don't get scammed. But you need to stop hiding and do something about it. |

"So scared" that they ruined their own life by sticking their head in the sand?
Your friend didnt HAVE to do this, your friend felt it was the way to deal with it. Your friend was wrong. |

I am going through the process of paying off all of the credit cards I had that went to collections. Its really stressful, I work 80 hours a week and am under serious stress. But it makes me feel better when I can slowly whittle away at my debt and know that I am finally paying people that I owe.
This whole experience has really helped me understand why some people commit suicide over bill problems though. Sometimes you feel completely attacked and like a horrible person. But you cant let it get to you, you have tp keep your head up and remember that you're doing your best. |

Debt is not a problem nowadays that can not be solved other than hiding away. The citizens advice is just one place that can help come to a solution. Hiding for years seems a bit drastic to me. Especially as there is bankruptcy as a final solution. |

I've had a couple of acquaintances who've declared themselves bankrupt. But despite this they've both had debts 'sold' to undesirables and both had severe beatings from the pikeys. Not a good situation to be in, bet they wish they'd done a runner. |

If you have a regular income you can try to get advice on how to get some of your debts written off and all the rest to go into one monthly payment. It think there's a company called Debt free direct who does this service.
If you don't have a regular income or can't manage to make any payment a month, then you may think of declaring yourself bankrupt and putting all of your assets on the name of someone you can trust. There will be nothing for any debts collector to collect and they will have to write your debt off. You won't be going to prison, but you will have no chance of receiving credit for at least 5 years. |

There is no prison for debt in UK, you get made bankrupted, and that's it |

A friend of a friend had something similar happen to him. He had to give his paychecks to my friend, she would cash them for him in her name, then give him the cash because no bank would let him set up an account. He could not get a loan, rent an apartment, or have utility bills in his name.
The best thing for your friend to do is stop hiding and face the music. Find a non-profit credit group to help him/her life back on track. Working hard to fix the problem is the only way to have a normal life, the problem will not just go away. |

If they are in the USA and have a social security number, they can run but they won't be able to hide forever. The best thing is bite the bullet, get counseling through a reputable company like Consumer Credit Counseling, and settle these debts or hire an attorney and see what their legal options are. Running away is only going to delay the inevitable. I had to pay way out of debt that I never thought I'd get it paid back. It's taken some time and added a few gray hairs but I'm almost there. I wish your friend the best of luck in however they choose to handle the situation. |
