Here's the deal on Cap One:

Not all their products are for people with bad credit. I have one of their cards any my credit is fine, and it has a large credit limit. The interest rate is a little on the high side, and one poster correctly stated that they will list your balance as your credit limit which really lowers your score by making it appear as if you're at 100% credit utilization. I hear they are changing this policy this year as a result of a class action lawsuit.

That said, I have never had a problem with them. I've only had to contact them a couple times, and both times the person on the other end has been helpful and friendly.

PS I think Cap One is one of the few cc companies that DOES NOT have a universal default policy...at least my card with them doesn't have that.

As long as you stay current....but be warned...be late for one payment and they increase your APR to the maximum. If yo pay on line get a confirmation # and do it 10 days prior to the due date.

I've had a Capital One card for ten years, and I don't think they're bad. I pay my bill in full almost every month, and rarely carry a balance. I got another credit card offer from a different company with a lower interest rate just as I was about to make a large purchase that would require carrying a balance for several months (meaning money for them as they'd finally have a purchase to charge interest on). I called CO and asked them to lower my interest rate to match the other card offer, and they did with no hesitation. I was late with a payment once and I called and asked them to waive the late fee since I was such a consistent customer and they did that as well. When I was going to do Hurricane Katrina relief in Louisiana, they granted me amnesty from payments/late fees/interest charges until I got back. They don't send me TONS of stuff in the mail nor do I get tons of phone calls from their telemarketers, unlike the Chase credit card I recently opened. I've found them to be very flexible and easy to deal with.

Just pay your bill on time, carry a balance as little as possible, and they'll be great. I'm sure others have had a different experience, but if you're a responsible credit card carrier they should work very well.

Bad customer service. They should spend more on getting better employess and less on advertising

I have one, and have had it for about 6 months. I havent had any problems. Your credit line may be small at first, if you pay on time and dont go over the limit they will increase it

Capital One is cool. They might charge you an annual fee. My mom has like 4 cards total with them. She asked them to combine all three credit limits to one card and they said no. Kinda strange huh?

MissV
Awful. Paid it off to get them off my back. Claimed it was my fault for exceeding the credit limit. Now have received offers in the mail for the past 10 years, usually 3 per month.

Cannot recommend them.

Capital One is a subprime lender meaning they will pretty much give plastic to anyone. But you have to watch out, when it comes to late fees and interest they are one of the worst in the business. They are notorious for slapping you with late fees and over the limit fees even if you believe you paid on time. Most CC companies have dirty little tricks they pull like arbitrarily changing your due date and minimum due hoping you won't notice. If you do and you dispute it their customer service is horrendous. They will keep you on hold and transfer your call around until you just give up. Also watch out for the "universal default clause". That's another dirty trick. It means if you're late on another card or any other creditor like a car payment or gas card they will launch your interest rate to what's called the default rate, something like 24%, reasoning that if you were late paying another creditor, even once, you are suddenly a high risk to them. Otherwise as long as you pay attention to your statements and always pay them on time they aren't too bad.

Matt
Another problem not mentioned here is that they do not report your credit limit.

If they give you a $500 credit limit and you spend $250, they will report your credit score as $250. This kills your credit score.

This is one of the worst cards available and I would be very careful using them.
