Have u been a victim of credit card fraud?
I've recently had £2,000 taken from my account. The bank cannot tell me where or how (is this true?!). How the hell do these fraudsters do it though? I still have my card and shred everything.
Additional Details
squidgy: its nothing to do with being 'thick' (which i most certainly am not!). I don't have to pay the money back its just a big inconveniance as i wait for new card, pin etc and am given no information.

It's foreign gangs, I'm afraid, and yet we still have to endure them coming here in their droves!!!
We had a call from the bank just this week. Someone had tried to buy £1,000 worth of computer goods with our debit card details. Fortunately, their wasn't the funds in our account, and we only have that much in the bank at the beginning of the month, when my hubby gets paid, but how do we stop this happening??? I live in a very remote little village, I don't drive, and my husband works 7 days a week. I rely on the internet for shopping.

I am so sorry you lost so much money, it just isn't right that the banks are not doing more to dtop decent working people getting ripped off. It's very frightening to think people can access peoples personal accounts, but what do we do???

Our bank told us that computer, and sports goods were ordered on the internet, but what I can't understand is, if someone is ordering these goods, surely they need an address to have these goods delivered, so why can't the police catch them at the address the goods are going to????
B.T.W. I sincerely hope it happens to Squidgy one day, (and I think it will, as I believe in karma) He's one who deserves it!!!!

I am fairly sure your bank should be able to tell you where the money came off. I take it that this doesn't show up on your statements, when i was victim of credit card fraud then i noticed a lot of transactions on my statements which had absolutely nothing to do with me, then contacted the bank who swiftly refunded all the fraudulent charges.

Good luck.....

If it's your account they should be able to tell you. Now they may not know how or where if it wasn't processed through a system at a store or something. You need to cancel the card and do a police report immediately.

They probably skimmed your card at a Petrol station. I only ever use cash to but Petrol, as foreign gangs have infiltrated them and are taking millions through skimming.

It's no fault of your's, I have too. There are loads of nasty Bast*rds out there, robbing from ordinary people. I'm sorry for you, cos it's happened to me too, and it's a horrible feeling, I don't know how,but they do. Good Luck in getting back to normal. x

I don't know about where you live but here in the USA the banks has records of all activities under my account #.

Demand to speak with a supervisor or manager of the bank and tell them your story.

It could be also that whenever you use your card in Restaurants or shops that the reciept they keep has your credit card # imprinted.

Here in the USA there are many fruadulant activity where someone that works in the restaurant might sell or personally use your credit card #.

So even though you say you shred you could also be taken advantage of in the above situation I just described.

Go to the Bank and make them send you the latest activities in your account and find out where the discrepancy lies.

Good luck!

My husband was and he was a Police Officer at the time, retired 9 months ago. They rang him to say there was unusual activelty on his account and could he verify a few transactions.

Anyway someone was saying there name was Ikram "Smith" as they only had my hubbys inials no christian name and were using a different delivery address not the same as ours.

So there you have it they have an address, but do they get the Met Police to go to the address and do anything? No. We had to get new cards and they attempted to use it several times afterwards. We even told the credit card company we think we know which transaction we had made that initally triggered the fraud but they were not interested.

In case your wondering why they wont reveal the details its probably because they are not allowed to, as annoying as it it.

About a month later we got a call from a major catalouge company saying someone wanted to use the old card to buy 5 mobile phones (who buys 5?) and would he please confirm his name and date of birth.

He asked them how they had our details and the card was being used fraudulently, and could he have their phone number. They hung up. The cheeky b8stards were ringing us to get details to apply for more cards in his name.

We never got a visit from the Police all he had to do is sign a declaration stating he had not given anyone permission to use his card and telling them which transactions were not ours.

The fraud begins with either the theft of the physical card or the compromise of data associated with the account, including the card account number or other information that would routinely and necessarily be available to a merchant during a legitimate transaction. The compromise can occur by many common routes and can usually be conducted without tipping off the card holder, the merchant or the bank, at least until the account is ultimately used for fraud.

A simple example is that of a store clerk copying sales receipts for later use. In some cases, millions of accounts have been compromised.

Stolen cards can be reported quickly by card holders, but a compromised account can be hoarded by a thief for weeks or months before any fraudulent use, making it difficult to identify the source of the compromise. The card holder may not discover fraudulent use until receiving a billing statement, which may be delivered infrequently.

It has happened to me. I don't know how either. Someone used my card in Israel and I live in the U.S. I had to sign a form saying that I was not in Israel when it happened and the credit company gave my money back. It took a couple of months though.

I've been the victim of accidental fraud. Which actually isn't fraud because fraud is intentional and my cases were accidental. It's because of my very popular name. My parents weren't thinking when I was born.

Were you able to get your money back though?

my credit card company alerted me to an unusually large payment made on my card which i was very grateful for - worth the small monthly charge they make for the fraud monitoring service
