Have you ever used a Rent-to own store? Are they just rip-off's?

brat71825
yep....I don't really think that they are rip-offs...If you need something you can get it for a little a week...YES you pay more in the end, but you may not been able to have it if it wasn't for a Rent-to-Own store.

alicia
I worked at a rent to own store and well it depends if you have the money to buy the stuff out right then yes it is a rip off. look at the cash price and then shop around see how much the difference is. Also you can pay it off ussually in 3 months at the cash price which is your best bet. also some of the stuff has been used and might have roaches in it !!! watch out

Radworks
It's a rip-off. By the time you've paid off your furniture, you could've bought a brand new one for less.

Yes they are rip offs, in the end you pay more to own the item rather than just purchasing it up front.

donanana
They are rip offs because you end up paying twice as much for the same thing that you were going to buy. I would save the money that the rent was - say $20 per week until you have the money to just buy it.

Yes I currently rent my fridge.. And whilst the cost does generally come to being double what the item is worth.. Its something that is worth looking into if you cant afford to get yourself something that you really need. I pay $33 a month for my fridge and it comes straight from my bank account.. I dont even notice its gone! and im not locked into any contract.. However most big companies will lock you in for 24 months etc but if you need it, rent it! if you dont wanna rent then save your money and buy

The only time I used one was when I was in a bind and my fridge died and I couldn't afford to actually spend the money to buy one for a couple weeks, so I think they are good for some stuff but I would never buy something from them.

they prey on people who dont have enough cash or credit to buy a computer for $800 so they get you to pay $2000 for the same computer buy letting you pay "Only $40 a week!!" (for 1 year)

Henry D
you tell me. You can rent a washing machine for $20 a week for a year and its yours, thats $20x52=$1040 or you can go to Sears and buy a washer and dryer for $700.

Yeah they're a rip off!!!!

It depends on a couple of factors

1. If you have bad credit, Rent to own may be the only way to go. They essentially extend you credit usually without a credit check. The interest is high, the payments tend to be low, and you will end up paying at least double what something is worth, but they are taking a big risk if you default on the payment.

2. For anyone else with a credit score about 500, forget it. Rent to own is the very worst way to go. You will pay double for furniture which is usually cheaply made. You are better off going to a finance company and simply buying what you need.

sexytrojan
It's a rip off. For what you pay them in rental payments and fees, you could purchase the item you want in 3 or 4 months.

jd
They generally are not good options for purchasing items because the total cost of the loan far exceeds the value of the item.

Yes, when VCRs first came out, my husband got one. After coming home and reading the fine print, we saw that we had to keep it a certain time. We really thought we were just renting it for awhile.

Anyway, most things from them aren't everyday necessities. Save up what the paymants would be, and you could pbibably buy the item free and clear.

Also, now is garage sale time. Almost everything I buy now has been pre-owned. Also there is freecycle if you really don't have money. My browser is being weird, but google freecycle, and you will get a page and type in your local area. Craigslist has free classifies ads, and you may find what you need there.

For a REALLY good price on furniture, go to a rummage sale near the end of the last day. The church will want to clean out its basement, and needs to get rid of it.I bougt a really solid chest of drawers for $5.

If you are buying furniture, start looking at the construction. Pull the drawers out, are they dovetailed, or are they just stapled together? Learn what high quality construction looks like. Who cares what it looked like if the arm of the couch falls off after your six year old sits on it. It looks like @#@# now.
