lota1 | Help - i'm scared, scottish power are gonna cut me off? |
i cancelled Direct Debit for 15th March cos it was gonna make me OD. i told them i could make payment of £65 on 5 April which i did and could i get new DD for 15 April. They said no.
Ive gotta pay £69 for March then 3 payments of £89 by DD, which is difficult as i havent got much spare cash.
Got a letter friday saying pay £210 within 7 days or they'll cut me off.
Any tips for when i call them Monday cos when i did research on the web it said the customer service is really bad and they are not a nice bunch.
Anyone got experience with this lot?? |

It's normally standard to threaten in letters, if you phone them and explain the situation, most companies are understanding, as you've been paying I don't see why they would make you pay...tell them you want to sort out a payment arrangement! Good luck. x |

All you can do is call them and ask to make an arrangement. Perhaps ask to have a meter installed that means you pay as you go? |

You could ask them for a pre payment meter - they'll take a pound a week off you if you get it installed.
But - It takes 3-4 weeks to get one installed so if you can clear the bill by then just cancel the installation. |

I would go and see Citizens Advice (http://www.adviceguide.org.uk/). It's a free service, they will let you know what your rights are and they will also negotiate an amicable arrangment on your behalf with Scottish Power.
Don't cancel direct debits in future, just phone and ask to speak to customer services and let them know you are experiencing temporary financial hardship and are not able to find the money to cover the bill this month. They should be able to suggest some solutions.
What they don't like is not being paid and not hearing from you.
My advice is to get the Citizens Advice on to it for you.
Good Luck and try not to worry too much. |

My experiences with them - and all electricity/gas companies - are not great. They often don't know their own rules. You could ask them to install a pre-payment meter. This means you pay as you go, buying powercards as you require them, but it works out more expensively per unit of gas/electricity used. |

go to citizen's advice, they ll help you . |

tell them you want a meter,,gas or electric,pre-pay,if they refuse say you will contact a law center and get them to act on your behalf.your costom is worth more than your threat and they will only put a debt on the meter for a few pounds a week as they do not actually need the money until the next financial year which in the uk is end of the year or april,,either way it makes little difference to you.if they refuse tell them to pass on your details to a collection company who will have to accept ONLY what you can realistically give which if it is a few pounds a week wont be worth the company buying and they will decline which still gives you the leeway to bargain.if the debt is passed onto a collection company you are within your rights to get another gas/electric company to supply your gas/electric as you now do not owe any company for your debt other than the collection company,,they literally BUY the debt and hand over the money while adding on their own extra to recoup from you.do not panic.if all else fails contact your local citizens advice bureau |

That's a standard letter for unpaid bills.
If you phone them and explain your situation they "should" accept any reasonable repayment offer you propose to them. Say that you are not in a financial position to repay the full amount so could you pay it in installments.
See how that goes. I know exactly how you feel. |

I think its very harsh when companies do this and order you to pay 3 months worth of bills all in one, I mean if you are having trouble just with one then how do they think you can pay for 3 months in 1 go!
I think that they should be understanding when you speak to them as you have been paying by direct debit before and haven't had any problems.
When you speak to them you need to explain your situation and hopefully you will be able to come up with something. If you can give them an idea of when you will be ok to do direct debits as normal then I am sure they will be ok. They just want to make sure they are getting their money.
If they don't want to help you then tell them you are going to switch companies. That might make them listen.
Good luck. |
