You have to pay or go to court. The court can determine whether there are any special factors in your favour.The court can order a rate of payment which the council has to agree to, but which you in turn have to adhere to or the bailiffs will be in.The other thing that worries me is that this arrears must apply to a previous year as 2007/8 has only just started. How will you pay the arrears and also the current year?.You have got to alter your life style or completely sink.You may virtually have to live on bread and water with no beer or cigarettes, takeaways or anything that costs money. Go see the Citizens Advice Bureau, they deal with this exact problem every day and should be able to help.

I use to work for Council Tax department, if you haven't already speak to the Recovery department and tell them that you want to make an arrangement. If you can try and pay a lump sum say a couple of hundred off of the bill this usually works. If they are still adamant that you can not make an arrangement go to Citizens advice they will contact them and 99% always manage to get an arrangement. If you are claiming benefits tell them to take instalments from you HB they can only take a minimum of Â£2.50 per week. If this does not apply please see the CAB they will be able to help you.

the council would normally agree a payment plan.. have to failed to stick to these in the past? Maybe keep paying about Â£20 extra per month to your current council tax and when you have overpaid at the end of the year they can put the overpayment money towards clearing your arrears..

Write to the Council inform them you wish to pay via payment plan , then wait for Court letter and reply asking for time to pay. good luck

If it gets passed to recovery department they will always offer you a payment plan however you must stick to it.

The only payment plan you'll get is the one the bailiffs set up when the council pass on your debt.

Once it has been passed to The Sherriff Officers you can arrange a payment plan with them. Believe it or not they are easy to deal with.
