It is possible that the information on your file is incorrect, which would then affect your credit rating. Your credit rating may also be damaged if you have had problems paying utility or credit card bills in the past due to illness, redundancy or the breakdown of a relationship, for example.
The only way to find out what information is held on you is to pay £2 to look at your personal credit file held by one of the two biggest credit reference agencies in the UK - Experian and Equifax.
If you do find information is incorrect you can add a 'statement of correction' of about 200 words to your file, which will be supplied to lenders in the future.

How can you improve your credit rating?

1. Make sure you are on the electoral register as lenders use it to confirm your name and address. Local authorities have also started compiling a rolling register for people who have moved, so you won't have to wait a year until a new list is compiled.

2. Ensure that you and other family members always pay your bills on time. A lender will see information relating to your other family members when you apply for credit and this may affect their decision. If you are estranged from your family, you can ask the agency to separate the files.

3. If you are turned down, don't then make a series of applications for credit in the hope of finding one lender who will give you money. These applications will also appear on your file and you may look desperate for money, or even worse, it may look as though you are trying to commit fraud.

Pay all your bills on time, every time.

Catch up on any past-due accounts.

Pay any and all bills on time.

The advice of the others above but also cancel all credit cards with a zero balance except for 1.
Use the card often but pay off balance every month. This proves you can manage credit. I had a very low credit score until I had a credit card.
Get your credit file from experian and remove any associates that may be bringing you down. 5 years after we split my ex was associated to my account and lowered my score.

First, make sure all the information on your credit report is accurate.

Second, try to pay off all or any accounts that are currently in collections or make payment arrangements with the creditor to pay off the balance monthly.

Third, any credit card that is over 50% of the available credit line should be paid down to under half of your total credit line. Your credit score is lowered when your available balance is over 50% of your total credit line.

Finally, if you have bad or no credit and have no credit cards try to obtain two credit cards and make sure all of your monthly payments are made on time. This will help increase your credit score. If you cannot be approved for a unsecured credit card, obtain a secured credit card.

Pay off any bad debt you have, pay other bills promptly and either stay away from credit for the next 6 years until it is removed from your credit file or get a credit card from Capital One but make sure you pay it regularly without missing or being late. Unfortunately there is no quick solution.

First, get a copy of your credit report.
Take a look and see what is on there.
If you have collection items, call the collection agency and make an offer to settle the debt (most times can be done for 50 cents or less on the dollar).
If you have open accounts that you do not use anymore, close them.
If you have high lines of credit - have them reduced
(for example : a credit card with a $10,000 line of credit - you may not use all of it, but you have the potential, creditors are not quick to extend credit when they see this) a simple phone call to the credit card company can resolve this
Check and see how many Inquiries appear on your credit report - this can dramtically drag down your credit rating.
Within a two month period my score dropped over 30 points because of this. I checked my credit report and had 37 inquiries from a company that I did not have credit with and I wasn't seeking credit with them either !!!
You can contact the credit reporting agency to have them removed
If you have several credit cards (revolving balances) try getting a loan to consolidate it all into one payment, then close all the accounts that were paid off
Usually within a 6 month period you will see your rating improve
If you have a car loan - refinance and try to get a lower rate
Whatever you do - do not go for those low/bad credit cards - the rates vary tremendously and you end up paying more a month for interest than you do on the priniple balance - you never get ahead that way.

One more pointer - add up your total available revolving credit (credit cards, car payments) and compare it to your yearly salary - if it exceeds your income - you will not fair well with applying for credit because they will look at you as unable to repay debt - this will also give you a better picture of what you need to do and where you need to adjust

The only sure way to build up your credit rating is by paying the bill on time... You don't necessarily have to pay off the entire bill each month... just make payments ON TIME and you'll be on your way to good credit. Worked for me =)

You should clean up your credit by disputing negative items that may be holding you down. The key is to have correctly worded letters with the right verbage that will get results. Good luck.
