Love | How am I supposed to get credit without going into debt? |
I'm a college student so i'm already strapped for cash and I've managed to be able to keep from getting a loan. I really need a car but I have no credit. I need a phone but I need credit. I have been taught my whole life not to get loans and credit cards so what am I supposed to do? |

If you really don't want to touch your credit, then get a prepaid phone, and save money for a car, then purchase it without a loan. Since you havent touched your credit, you will be able to get a cell phone under contract on your credit...now that wont build your credit, because cell phone companies only report non-payment. If you cannot save up for a car then you may have to get a loan. Eventually you will need to touch your credit. Only get stuff on your credit if you can afford a monthly payment. |

Establish credit by getting cards that you know you can pay off within the month you charge on it. It requires discipline, but your credit will build quickly this way.
Get credit cards places you would spend money anyway, such as gas cards, department stores, or discount store (target, walmart). Plus when you sign up, you typically get 15% off your first purchases (a great option for students needing small furniture).
Also, if you are living on your own, if your energy or water bills are in your name that builds credit as well. Plus they require no prior credit.
Credit is SUCH a drag. |

You have stumbled upon the Catch 22 of the credit industry. Opening credit card accounts hurts your credit in the short-term, while you are benefited by having open credit accounts with small balances and timely payments in the long-term. My advice would be to weather the short-term repercussions of opening a credit card account with a rate in line with, or below the national average (I would check bankrate.com for this information) in order to take advantage of the benefits of good credit later in life (mortgage applications, etc.). This of course needs to be qualified with the assumption that you can handle the responsibility of having a credit account. |

If you have $500 in the bank or can put in the bank, do it, then get a loan for $500. You give them your money, then borrow theirs. Pay it back in 5 months. You've established good credit without going into debt. Paying only the small interest charges. |

You can't build credit without going into debt.
And you don't need to build credit.
Save and get a cash car. with no payments you can save money. You will never get ahead making a car payment. You'll pay $1,000's in interest.
Also, you don't need a credit score for a home loan. It's called manual underwriting. Its not a sub prime loan. It's the way it was done before the fico score. You can get the lowest rates going. |

The best way is to get and use credit that you can afford. If you want a cell phone I suggest that you get the pre-paid phone, you can purchase any phone you want (Video, camera phone, Mp3) and then just get the minutes as you go. That way you dont have to worry about not paying your bill and having that effect your credit score. In terms of purchasing a vehicle, you have to know that if you want to own the newest shiniest car on the lot you are gonna have to be prepared to pay upwards to $500 dollars a month for a term of 5 years to get the lowest payment. My advise would be to save and get an affordable car that will get you from A to B. Yeah its not gonna shine like the sun, but it will keep you from walkin in the rain. Loans and credit cards arent a bad thing if you pay your bills on time, when you start to get deliquent... thats when it turns into a mistake. |

To get good credit, a good start is having two or three credit cards in good standing. You don't actually have to go into debt. Get two or three credti cards, make one purchase on each and pay them off with the first statement. THen stick them in your filing cabinet and "forget" you have them. As the account gets older and credit limits are increased, your credit will look good to those who are considering you are a creditor. |

In my opinion, don't use it at all. You'll go into debt buying things you think you need, then you won't have the money for necsessities. Need over want.
If you must get something, however, buy a used car. Much cheaper, and you'll stay in debt for less time. |

In this day and age, you need credit for almost anything that you try to do such as getting a loan, a vehicle, a phone and sometime even a job. The best thing that I can recommend to you is to apply for a department store credit card, usually they are good about approving you for a loan. Keep in mind that when you get approved, you don't have to spend the full credit line, because you are building credit you will want to figure out how much you are able to afford to pay each month towards this credit card, say 50.00 per month, and only spend this much per month, that way you will not accrue any interest on the loan, which is sounds like that's why your family has always told you not to get loans. The first 6-12 months are the most important months, so you are going to want to make sure that you always, always make your payments on time and do not go over the limit of the credit line that the company gives to you. Also its always better to pay at least the minimum payment for a credit card rather than nothing at all, so lets just say that one month you spent well beyond your means, be sure to make at least the minimum payment on the account, credit cards do not require that you pay the full amount each month. Good luck |
