How bad is it to use a credit card?
I only have two credit cards. One is for Macy's and has no balance on it, the other is a Visa and it has a credit limit of $3,100. That one has only about $150 credit left on it. How bad does it look for my credit score (if I wanted to buy a house, get a loan, etc) to have one card that is nearly maxed out?

I know I need to pay it off. I just had a baby and daycare takes most of our money. I will work on paying it (I am paying $100 a month now, but with interest that's not moving it down very fast) but my question is how does it affect my credit score??

Using a credit card is not bad if you use it responsibly, infact it can be VERY good if you use it right. I've more or less eliminated ALL serives charges on my bank account and now pay next to nothing a money for banking products and take regular vacations from the points collected on the card. I pay off my card every 15 days, since the interest doesn't kick in until 20 days, so there's no cost on the credit card either other than the annual fee, which is far less than the benefits of the points I collect. Unfortunately, most people blame thier irresponsible spending habits and lack of putting in the time to understand what they are getting into (IE: actually reading what they sign, etc) on the credit card companies and say "Credit cards are evil. Never buy anything on credit!" Any financially litterate person knows that not all debts are bad.

Relating to your specific questions:

Whether or not you have a credit card maxed out or not doesn't typically have much affect on your credit score. As long as you are making at least the minimum monthly payments it won't have a negative affect. IF you make increased payments though it will have a more positive affect on your credit score.

The only times credit cards will affect your ability to get a debt product is if there are late payments/delinquent payments or when they calculate your debt service ratio and that doesn't matter if you are maxed out or not, they still calculate it based on the amount that you would owe IF it was maxed out.

I love to use credit cards.
But I have never carried a balance or paid a penny interest. That just seems dumb to me.

Now, what you are doing with your VISA is disastrous. You have it almost maxed out. You should only (at most) have it to 30% of available credit.
You need to pay off that card IMMEDIATELY and make sure you get a statement that says 0 balance.

You are ruining your credit by carrying a balance.
What you need for perfect credit is 1 or 2 cards, but they need to be paid off each and every month.

You are not using credit cards correctly. Please get out of this ghetto mentality. Use cards, don't let them use you.

Pay it off first, then think about buying a house!

You need to use a credit card wisely to help establish good credit. Good credit is essential for big purchases such as a house or a car, especially in this economy.
Keep your Macy's card low, like you are doing. Pay down the debt on your Visa, as you are almost maxed out. When you need to buy something, use cash and give the Visa a rest.

Chances are you have a high interest rate. Phone Visa and ask to talk to a customer service manager and agree to pay off at least $150.00 per month providing that they lower the interest rate. Explain that you have just had a baby and money is tight etc. If they say no, then you tell them that when it is payed off you will be cancelling the card. They don't want that so chances are they will negociate. Providing that you have not missed a payment it should not affect your credit score.
Any extra money that you get put towards the credit card. Meanwhile, put both cards in a glass of water and put them in the freezer so that you cannot not access them. Remember that credit should be used, only in emergencies.
See if you qualify for a daycare subsidy, or look around for a cheaper daycare or a private daycare.
Also, budget, budget, budget. For two weeks keep every reciept that you and your partner spend money on. Look at these and see where the money is going. Do you eat out a lot, drink coffee at Starbucks everyday, overspend on magazines etc, etc. Once you have a fair view of where the money is going you can look at what areas you can trim down. If you eat out a lot, don't. If you drink a Starbucks coffee everyday, add that up over a month and you'll see at least $75 per month on coffee, ON COFFEE.
Start living on cash only and get glass jars and label them, RENT & HOUSEHOLD EXPENSES, FOOD, CLOTHING, GAS & TRAVEL, ENTERTAINMENT & MISC and DAYCARE. Fill these jars with a budgeted amount of cash money for two weeks or a month. That is all the money you use on those items for that time period and when the jar is empty, that is it.
It works. When we see how much money we spend we start to think.
If you look in the Food jar and see that there is only $40 left and 5 days till payday you won't order takeout, you'll cook. When you see $20 in Entertainment and Misc and 8 days till payday, you won't buy a coffee, you'll bring your own. You will see how quickly you find left over or extra money that can pay off your bills. Also, since you have a baby that will out grow things, finds a consignment/used kids store that will buy your used toys, equipment and clothes. You can make a quick $50 to $100 there.

You should not get into more debt (house, car etc.) when you already have debt.

Pay it off - save money - buy with cash.

Credit cards themselves are not bad, but using them when you don't have the money to pay each month is bad.

I would make sure that you would pay off that amount on the credit card. If you pay it off, you look better and can get a better loan.

I used to work for a major credit card company and I have bought a house within the last year and a half. First of all you don't owe that much so it is really not going to hurt you all that bad. However, the general rule is that you never want to owe more that half of what your credit limit is on any given credit card. As far as the Macy's card goes... close it. It won't matter if you owe anything on it when you go to buy a house. The bank will look at it as a debt waiting to happen. They will count all your credit card limits up and treat them as they were all maxed out. The reason they do that is because the first thing a person tends to do when they buy a house is they go shopping for housewares such as furniture, kitchen appliances, you name it. They have the house and now they have to fill it. So my advice is close your Macy's card and pay your other one down below $1500.00 and you'll be looking good when they pull your credit.

pay it off

ok slow down on the visa, and if i was you i cut up the Macy's one. yes it will be bad if you go over the limit, i mean really bad. if you want to buy those thing, try paying off a little bit on your card before you go shopping again. how old are you? i mean if you are like 18 to 24 you should only get about 300 limit. but you 3100 limit you should be old to know what to do with a credit card.

its totally okay as long as u r paying it back..u shd make more then just the minimum payment each month..and dont miss a bill...keep paying it off... believe me ..i screwed or in the process of it lol myself over... i maxed out like 4 cards...lol they r like 2-300 each... soo i owe like a thousand...and now im not able to pay back tht much..and its been open for quite awhile... sooo take my advice...dont get another card until u pay off tht one..believe me..and make more then just the minimum payment...pay it off..even slowly is fine..dont worry u will b fine...if u do tht..
