I've never borrowed money or used a credit card b/c I always believed you shouldn't buy things you can't pay for. I never bought anything til I had enough money saved to pay in full. Every bill has been paid on time, Rent is always ontime....but now I need credit for a loan for a house and I can't get approved. I've tried applying for credit cards at stores, even at my bank, but I always get rejected b/c I don't have any credit. How can I build credit if no one will give me a chance? I thought paying everything in full on time was a good thing.... |

It is a good thing...and a bad thing. I had the same situation, there are credit cards companies that will approve you, with a very low credit limit..and more then likley there will be some kind of start up cost. I got a Capital One card w/ a $200 limit. I had to pay $39 start up fee, and i'm good to go! Building my credit. You won't get a high limit or anything, but its something you get your credit built up.
I found out about this deal through a Pre-Approved piece of mail I got! Keep a eye out for some of those, and maybe you'll find one thats right for you. |

You should be able to get someone to give you a credit card.. It'll probably have a high interest rate since you have no credit history but if you pay it off then you don't need to worry about that.
Use the card each month and pay it off each month. This will help build your credit. |

You can do one of two things, Either get a secured credit card with a $500 limit or apply for a secured loan for 24 months and pay it back in 12. Then you'll get all the credit you need. |

Try applying for a secure credit card. Thats the type of CC I was finally got approved for when trying to get a good credit rating. I used it and payed it off. I did this for a couple months. Then I applied for a loan and got approved. |

Well ya go to Sears and get their sears mastercard, they'll give it to ANYBODY, and buy something on it instead of using cash, then immediately pay it off. That'll build your credit for sure. Oh AND you're still sticking to what you like to do, paying for things on time. It worked for me and I had bad credit. |

Get a gas card (like Exxon). Pay it off every month. After about six months, get a department store card, like Sears or Penney's - something you would use. Use it and pay it off.
9-12 months of this will get you a credit history.
There is no fast way to do this and the way banks are these days about loaning money, especially on mortgages, you have an uphill battle ahead of you. |

Are you in a rush to buy a house? If not, go with your original philosophy of not buying something you can't pay for upfront and save the money for most of the cost of the house. Be open to live in all kinds of areas - except for high-crime areas, of course - you may find something for under $70,000. I found a house in the city for $45,000 in a working-class neighborhood! If you are frugal and someone is willing to let you shack up with them (a relative or friend?) for little to nothing, you could save a healthy down payment on something like that. If you can come up with more than 20% than the lender will not look at your credit as much as a factor. Credit was only invented for people who don't have money up front, anyways.
Otherwise, try Orchard Bank or a secured credit card, where you have to put money in the account first. Buy something within 30% of the credit limit and pay if off the next month. Do that for six months and that should raise your FI CO score. After you do that, you may get other credit card offers. Word to the wise. Don't go over 2 credit cards. A lot of people out there are in over their heads. |

I got one of those debit visa cards you can buy in most chain pharmacies or cash checking stores and shopped online for awhile. I was only spending money I actually had and building a great credit rating. Most sites like Amazon don't distinguish debit card from credit card so your credit goes through the roof. I went from no credit to a 794 credit score doing this. |
