fabs83 | How can I build credit if no one wants to give me credit? |
I have been trying to apply for the past couple years at various places like, Walmart, Target, Dillards, Macy's, Best Buy, couple of gas credit cards and even local furniture stores. They all turn me down because I dont have any credit information. I'm 24 yrs old and I know 18 year olds who have credit cards and loans on cars. WTF?! And I dont want to do one of those secured card deals. According to my friend's boyfriend I am considered a "ghost" when it comes to credit. I ran my credit through Equifax, Experian and some other big one and they don't have any record. Just my name and former addresses. No credit score, nothing! I dont have bad credit, I have NO credit. Any suggestions? |

Well first off, you have WAY too many inquires, so at this time, no major credit card company would issue you a card nor would a bank give you a loan. The only option you have right now is to get a secured card... Check with your bank first, because if you have a good history with them, they may help you. If not, Bank of America has a partially secured card, that you put $99 in a savings account and they give you a $500 limit. If you pay on time and don't go over the limit, they will change your card to unsecured and increase your limit in a year.
Other than that, you would have to wait until all of those inquires drop off your credit. Oh and FYI, do NOT apply for muiltple lines of credit because it makes you look desperate!!! |

The secured credit card is indeed a great way to start rebuilding your credit history. It helps you gain financial discipline and stay within the credit limits, because of the low credit limit initially you are not tempted to charge huge expenditures on your credit card and pay for them either in cash or by some other means. Thus a secured credit card helps in more than one ways. It is for the credit card holder to take advantage of all the features offered by the secured credit card and regain control over his credit history. all these other posts are somewhat correct. except the fact thjat no bank or lending institution will give u a unsecured card. total crap. listen to me. all you do is goto capitolones webe site. capitolone.com . goto there student credit card section. apply for a student card. even if you are not a student it does not matter. we do not check or verify. i guaruntee in about 10 days you will recieve a card with a five hundred dollar credit limit. a good rate and grace peroids. and you can take that straight to the bank.lol. another place to start is by going to your local credit union. they wont give you a credit card but they will approve you for an unsecured auto loan( actually it is secured but by the vehicle you purchase) all they willrequire you u to do is open a savings account ith them. you may have to keep calling them. but if theyt deny you the first time. call them and ask to speak to the loan officer who handled your request. you will get the loan i tell you. |

You can start buy getting a secured Visa or Mastercard.
The way these work is that you put down a deposit, say $500 and they give you a credit line usually double that. Make all your payments on time for a couple of years and they will probably offer to refund your deposit and/or upgrade your card to a non-secured card.
I am assuming you are not a student, because I know I got credit card offers constantly when I was a student ... unfortunately I got in big trouble with them and it took a while to establish good credit later. |

Credit card companies are eager to get 18 year olds into debt. They were always hanging around my college campus signing up kids left and right for free squeeze toys and other lame crap.
I'd be more suspicious of a 24 year old without credit as well. My girlfriend is 24 and can't finance steam off a hot dog. I added her as an "authorized user" for a few of my credit cards. Now she is building credit.
It's easier to get a car loan than a credit card. It's easier to buy a home than getting a car or credit card. At my bank we'll give you a home loan with no credit score or even a social security number (TIN number only, foreign nationals) with the right down payment.
Credit cards are "unsecured" which is very risky. Try Orchard Bank (google it)or one of those places that offer cards to everyone. They all stink because they charge high fees . Otherwise, get someone (your boyfriend?) to cosign for you or get you a credit card. |

Well, doll--hate to break it too you; at this point the ONLY way to establish credit would be "one of those" secured credit cards--UNLESS you start putting bills on your name such as hydro, cable, internet, or you can get a good start with a cel phone plan. BUT if you start out like THAT the bills have to be paid BEFORE the due dates and EVERY month!
--Unfortunately, i dont understand how at 24 you dont have ANY credit!! I f your still living with parents or are supported by parents and have never HAD to actually put bills in your name; it might be time to start OR get parnts to co-sign for a line of crediy, MOST credit cards allow second and third card holders..........here are your options......GOOD LUCK!! :>) |

Try places like Fashion Bug or other dress places. Someone will give you a small one and then use it and pay it off each month. Once you get one, you will get plenty. Are you working? As long as you can show the ability to pay, you should be able to get credit. Dillards was on campus offering cards to anyone that would take them. They only had a $400 limit but so what, it is a start. My other suggestion is gas cards. Try different places until someone gives you one. |

Secured credit cards are a great way to rebuild your credit. Most secured credit card companies require a deposit equal to the credit line your are seeking. Make sure they report your payment monthly to the major credit bureaus. Making your payments on time monthly will increase your credit rating. You will also get you deposit returned to you after one year, turning your secured credit card into a unsecured credit card. |

Almost every bank in the US has a secured credit card.
You can open an account, put your money in a CD and earn decent interest while your money is secured. The usually give you a VISA or MC equal to your deposit. |

The worst is trying to get credit at department stores! The best way to get a credit card is to go to your bank and ask for one! If you have a long time relationship with your financial institution they will give you a credit card based on your history with them or maybe ask you to put money down as security. (a gic, term for whatever amount you want to borrow) If that doesn't work go to a RBC, CIBC and ask for a "student credit card" Even if you're not a student they usually give you one because you have no credit! Good luck and remember to pay it off or at least the min balance owing. Never ever ever forget to pay your bill!! |

I've heard of this one credit card that helps build your credit. I would probably be open to this and read how it works. This might be exactly what you are looking for. debit cards which offer a built-in credit reporting feature. This is a debit card that offers the power to build up your credit. |

I have been to "many" different credit repair sites on the web. Some were pretty good and some were pretty bad. I refuse to use a website<!--that requires a fee to get their credit repair info when there is great free sites on the web.. I'm listing the best site that I've ever been to.
http://badcredits.awardspace.com/repaircredit.htm
It is a "free" do it yourself credit repair site. I have learned so much by reading and asking questions on that site. And, I have seen "significant" improvement on my credit reports after learning-->my rights and using them.Don't pay for information that you can find for free. |

I agree with the consensus of people that a secured credit card will be the best option for you. You could try Capital One like Nayguy said, but the problem with that is that they will not start reporting credit limits correctly until later on this year, not to mention that chances are the interest rate (APR) will be obscene. As you've mentioned earlier, you've appliedd to several department stores over the past couple of years with no luck because you're "invisible" in the credit world. Being a former credit analyst and underwriter for a credit card company, I've seen this happen time and time again. To tell you the truth, secured credit cards are sometime even better than some of the unsecured cards out there when it comes to interest rates and annual fees. Although you'd have to put a deposit upfront, you would secure a line of credit. This can work in your favor because you can increase the credit line by adding to the deposit. So not only you're building credit but you're creating a savings for yourself. Think of it as an investment, the only way you lose the deposit is if you don't pay the bill on time every month, and it goes delinquent, charged off and sent to collections. I've done it with 2 secured cards myself, although my credit was strong enough to get regular cards because I knew that I needed to start a savings for myself and I could build credit at the same time. I got 2 cards, quickly built up the limits on both of them by adding to the deposit, made small purchases like socks on one and boxers on the other, and paid the balances off in full every month while I continued to add to the deposit. About a year later when it came time for the cards to convert to regular ones, I had gotten the limits to well over $5K on both and with a 0 balance, so not only I got regular cards, but I got by deposit back, which was even better because it had gained interest while I was building credit. From there I got even more offers for credit like crazy, not that I wasn't getting offers to begin with. If you do the same thing, I guarantee that the same will happen with you So, that's what I mean when it's an investment. So to answer your question how can you build credit, if no one wants to give you credit? You give YOURSELF credit with a secured card, and then everyone else will see the light!
One more thing before I go, it also helps to open a checking and savings account with a bank that offers secured cards as well. It helps you to have accounts in excellent standing with any bank, especially the major ones, just a thought. But in closing I did post a list of banks that do offer secured cards that are the best out there, hopefully you'l be able to find one that works for you. If not, I wish you good luck on your search to build credit. Also I posted a link to PRBC. It's a new credit bureau that helps you build credit as well. PRBC is a consumer reporting agency that collects, stores, scores, and reports bill payment data for "permissible purposes" under the Fair Credit Reporting Act. It is the first credit bureau to give prospective borrowers the tools to demonstrate their creditworthiness without the need to go into debt. In addition to receiving payment data from creditors and financial institutions' bill payment services, PRBC has partnered with the National Credit Reporting Association to verify trade line accounts and up to three years worth of prior payments that consumers themselves can report directly to PRBC.
Lenders can purchase a PRBC Report depicting a consumer's bill payment history either on a standalone basis, or merged with Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion credit reports. Each PRBC Report is accompanied by a PRBC Bill Payment Score (BPS). A PRBC Report may also be used as a "non-traditional mortgage credit report" (NTMCR) that meets Fannie Mae's, Freddie Mac's, and FHA's standards for documenting creditworthiness. PRBC does not charge consumers a fee to enroll in the service or to view their own payment data at any time. PRBC advocates that Payment Reporting Builds Credit and can be accessed at www.PRBC.com
I know that it's a lot of information, but hopefully you can make some options out of it
good luck once again, and thanks for reading |

I believe that store and gas company credit cards are more difficult to get than national cards like Visa and MC.
One way to build credit to buy something on credit like a car, and then pay all your payments back on time. If you can't get it on your own credit, you can co-sign with someone.
Why don't you want a secured card? |
