Gizmo | How can I build credit if no one will give me a credit card? |
I am 24 years old and have lived on my own and within my means since I was 18. I work in Commercial Real Estate and do fairly well. I pay my rent and all my bills on time (or within 2 days of on time if I forget to send out mail) and have not ever been in debt. I am trying to build credit right now in order to buy my first home as I am sick of renting, earn enough/ have enough savings to do so and would like to take advantage of the low interest rates (yes I plan on staying there long enough to avoid losing money due to the market crash). I have 2 store credit cards that I rarely use and pay off as soon as i get the bill. For some reason, neither shows up in my credit history. My mortgage broker told me to get a card from my bank, where I have had 2 accounts with reasonable balances for the past 6 years and they denied me based on a lack of history. I don't want some kind of high interest scam card that I constantly get pre-approved for. What can I do? Additional Details I do have a savings account and I did ask them about that... they said that their credit cards are totally seperate from the other parts of their banking, so no luck there. |

I think I know what you broker did. Ask him if he enrolled you with PRBC. It's a new credit bureau that allows people to self enroll to report non traditional bills like you have and report them as credit. Matter of fact, they've teamed up with Fair Issac, (the maker of the FICO score) to make the FICO expansion score. I'll just post these next 3 links for you to read that will explain in detail

Find a new mortgage broker, and ask if they still do "manual underwriting".
At least, that's what Dave Ramsey says, and he has a financial talk show that emphasizes that you should never get into debt in the first place. |

Sounds like your best bet may be to obtain a secured credit card. It will temporarily cost you the money up front for the limit of your card but it can help you create a positive credit history. Good Luck! |

To build your credit score you need to start using your store cards and pay them off every month. If you only use them rarely it will not create a strong history. When I started I used SEARS card (the Banana Republic of the world do not count against your credit history), then I did puchase for about 6 month to a year. The key is to use the SEAR card. Otherwise I would ask the bank again, go to the branch and talk to the manager. Have them issue a card with a low limit and...start using it. If they refuse go to another bank, inquire about transfering your checking that include a credit card. You can also try Discover card, always start with a low limit and then ask them to increase the limit later on (1 year later).
Finally, check your credit score, make sure that no one is screwing around with it.
Good luck |

You can apply for credit cards online at VISA and Mastercard, and Capital One's web sites. Not sure why your bank declined you becuase it sounds like you have enough history with them but you never know. When I first applied for a credit card it was because I was going to be traveling abroad and didn't want to acess fees with my bank card. I did it at the last minute and so I applied for three just in case. I was declined for one, was given a $200 limit with another and a $3,000 limit with the third. And these were all well known companies. So maybe you just need to shop around.
Also, the best way to obtain credit is though a loan. Do you have a car? Paying off car loans in a timely manner will raise your score. Or if you have a family member with good credit who will put you on their card "just for emergencies". Even if you never use it, their good credit will build yours. They don't even have to give you your own card to access the account if they don't want to. My mothter has outstanding credit and put my name on her card when I was in college. It helped me a lot. So does the fact that I've owned four cars. When the first was totalled I paid it off with insurance money and bought the next... and so forth. Paying of those loans helped me tremendously. |

Try Chase or capital one and don`t worry about how much interest they charge, just pay your bills in full as they come and you don`t have to pay interest.
Believe me, if my son can qualify for a credit card, I am very sure that you can :-)
Good luck |

Do you have SAVINGS at the bank or just checking accounts? If you have SAVINGS ask the bank to issue you a Secured card against them...In other words if you pledge say $500 of your SAVINGS as security...You will have a credit limit of $450 (they won't give you the full $500 usually as they protect themselves from risk that way). Use that card and don't pay the balance in FULL when you do pay...make 3x the minimum payment for 6-9 months. Repeat the process with another provider...After that you'll have a history. FYI it's okay to pay them off after the 6-9 months and don't get in the habit of carrying the balances for as you know Credit Card interest is the most expensive kind. PEACE! |

Get another mortgage broker. I personally would also get a different bank, and it would be a credit union. You should not need a credit card for a mortgage if you've been paying your own bills: utility, telephone, etc. -I didn't.
Try your bank again, explain you've been a good customer for 6 years and it's in their interests to issue you a credit card as well as help you into a mortgage, and that you will be pleased to take your business elsewhere.
Check your credit report again, because if you were delinquent with those store cards they'd sure show up in a hurry. You can also write to the credit reporting bureaus and get those cards added to your report.
The secured credit card is a good idea, too, but it's usually something people need who have bad credit.
Again, you really shouldn't need a credit card at all. Sounds like your broker is being lazy. |

Try applying for capital one or HSBC, they are usually pretty good. You can also get prepaid credit cards to build credit history..The process hopefully should be about 6 months. or maybe you just need a different Mortgage brokers, the market would be great for you right now since house prices have feel. I was in same situation and I did apply for mortgage at ditech.com and was approved threw many good companies..plus I didn't have to pay a broker fee..try to have more of a down payment than 10% that also helps..Capital one also handles mortages Good Luck |
