How can I build my credit within the next year and a half?
I royally screwed up my credit when I was 18. I'm getting married and I don't want to bring my sucky credit into it. I want to get my score as high as possible before next year because we're going to try and buy a house together...should I take out a loan and pay it off? I'm having a hard time finding people to work with me.

Ideally you should "pay it off" without the " take out a loan " part, however the best people I know in these matters are http://www.gsx1.com/RestoreCredit.html
hope it works out for you.

buy little things on you're credit card like gum or pens or something that you know you can afford and then pay it back early.......also....you can take out a loan from the bank and then let the money sit there.......then you pay it back no problemo!!

Having trade lines that you pay on time every month will really help your score. If your scores are really low, it may take more time than you have to get them way up. There is some good news though. Find an FHA broker willing to work with you now for a future loan (preferably one who does a good bit of manual underwrite loans), assuming you are in the US and have them pull your credit. They can tell you what old items you would have to pay off for an FHA mortgage. FHA may be your best bet anyway. There are three very good benefits that will help you. 1) Cr. score doesn't matter (although recent credit history does), 2) You can get 100% financing thru their allowed 3% gift programs (paid by seller) along with a 97% mortgage, a rare thing today. 3) You can use alternative trades that don't typically show up on your credit such as rent, phone, power, etc. You will need 4 trades total including any on your credit report. Be sure and pay these on time by check or get receipts. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Your credit will become his/her credit. Your money, our money. Your credit, our credit. While you will still be individually rated (FICO), your credit will be an issue when you try and buy big ticket items together (house, car).

I'm not sure you can fix it quickly, but I would start with paying off (not closing) your credit cards, for those that you can't pay off, I would bring them down to less than 1/2 the available credit. What they're looking for is wise of use credit.

Establishing yourself as a wise user, could take time.

It's totally doable and hope you can do it within 1.5 years.

First, make sure all the information on your credit report is accurate.

Second, try to pay off all or any accounts that are currently in collections or make payment arrangements with the creditor to pay off the balance monthly.

Third, any credit card that is over 50% of the available credit line should be paid down to under half of your total credit line. Your credit score is lowered when your available balance is over 50% of your total credit line.

Finally, if you have bad or no credit and have no credit cards try to obtain two credit cards and make sure all of your monthly payments are made on time. This will help increase your credit score. If you cannot be approved for a unsecured credit card, obtain a secured credit card.

Repairing your credit and improving your credit score is a slow process that takes time.

Some tips on making your credit score go up:

Pay all your bills on time
Pay off maxed out cards first
Don't cancel any credit cards
Don't apply for too many credit accounts in a short period of time.

A good credit score is a vital asset for your financial present and future. To a large extent, your credit standing determines what opportunities are open to you, especially as it concerns finances. Therefore, the importance of building a good credit rating cannot be over emphasized. 'It's a thing you really can take to the bank'.There are several steps you must follow and some rules you will have to adhere to if you sincerely want a good credit standing. However, after establishing your credit<!--worthiness, you will find that it was worth the stress.Another strong point you can make while building good credit is a solid income history. Maintaining a good record with banks and other creditors will also go a long way in portraying you as credit worthy. Visit the site to know more on how to build a credit.

To build good credit, it is also useful to get national or local retailer's card. It is always easy to win credit from retailers and once you have established a good track record with a retailer, you could use the reference to boost your credit and also to secure additional credit from others. You will find it quite easy to establish a good record with-->retailers and will also be pleasantly surprised at the positive influence it can have on your credit rating.Just like repairing bad credit, building a good credit rating requires time and a lot of financial discipline, but in the end, you will be proud of what you have achieved.

You should provide some more information. Do currently have any credit cards or loans? If so, keep paying them on-time. For credit cards, try and get the balance owed to 50% or less than the total credit amount you have. for example, if you have a $1000 limit, keep the balance at $500 or below. This along with on time payments will help build your FICO score.

If you have no credit cards or loans then I would suggest a secured credit card. Secured cards are where you pre-pay a certain amount then begin using the card. When you charge something you will get a bill and you pay that bill. When you are out shopping for something and you have the cash to pay for it, use the card to buy it then send the money immediately to the credit card company. That way you are keeping up with the bills and not falling into the credit trap.

If you follow through with the buy/pay immediately philosophy you will be reported as paying your bills on time and will contribute positively to your FICO score. Eventually you will establish a relationship with the credit card company and you can stop having a secured card and move to a credit card.

If you follow through on this for a year and a half without missing a payment you should end up with a half way decent credit score.

Good luck!

Take out a small personal loan from your local bank or credit union ($500-1000) Keep the money in the bank so you don't spend it. Then make the payments...ON TIME.....this will give you a credit line. Get a regular credit card. Stay away from store credit cards. Absolutely don't get credit lines at jewelry stores. and furniture stores. Use the credit card on a minimal regular basis and pay almost all of it off each month on time, but make sure you use it each month. Do not let the amount on the card get above 80% of the limit. DONT PLAY min payment games. It will take 12-18 but more likely 24 months to get your FICO up. Also start saving every penny you can get for a down payment on the house. The bigger the down payment, the better the rate and the better the chance of you getting a house with not great credit scores. The amount of money you have in reserves can help in getting a loan. Also things will loosen up in 18-24 months so aim for that time frame. Save Save Save...PS your partner needs to do the same thing to build up her FICO.
