How can I collect a debt from someone who is hiding from me?
Someone owes me several thousand dollars from a dishonest investment scheme. He lives in another state. I tried having my attorney bring him to court to get a judgement issued, but the sheriff can't find him at any address. I had a friend also go by his listed addresses, and he was nowhere to be found. The information reports I got from internet location agencies were inconclusive. There must be a creative way to find someone, even when they are trying to hide. Any ideas? I don't ever intend to give up.

Yes it is called "Skip Tracing". There are companies and private investigators who specialize in this. However, if they are really hidden the cost to find the person may end up being more than the amount of your suit, so you have to take that into consideration.

However, each jurisdiction has it's own rules for "serving" a person they can not find. Such as sending it to a last known address or posting listing in the local newspaper. In this case you can actually have the case heard and a default judgment entered if they can't find him.

Now, if you want to do this on your own is do what is known as "Address Correction", which is a very common and simple way to do a skip trace. This is where you send the letter to the last known address and request "Address Correction". If the Post Office has a change on-file they will send you the new address. The cost for this is minimal and you can check with your local post office directly on how to do that.

If he doesn't want to be found, chances are he won't be found. He probably goes by a different name, or several. If I were you, I'd ask yourself why you keep doing this and what you stand to gain in the end if you're spending valuable time and money trying to find him. Will you profit from this in the end and, if you never find him, aren't you just losing more? I understand there is a principle in the matter but it honestly sounds like you're a little obsessed. If he has been this hard to find for purposes of a judgment, chances are good you won't see any money from him even if you get that judgment. The judge isn't going to make him pay up before he leaves the courthouse. You have to find the sources of his income and he has to stick around long enough for you to take from it.

At any rate, I wish you luck in your efforts.

Try using a private investigator.

Have you tried a Freedom of Information Act request from the Post Office? They are called "po letters" and your attorney should know of it and be able to send one out.

Once you are sure that you have a deliverable address and you think that the defendant is ducking you, your attorney can file a motion for alternative service, such as by mail or publication.

This may sound far out but why not try what the police do when the want to catch someone. Get the word out that he has won a big jackpot but has to come in to sign papers. It probably wont work but may be worth the effort.

How much money do you want to spend chasing your several thousand dollars? If you don't care, hire a private investigator.

Try running a credit report on him or go to D.M.V. Get his driving record. there it will give info on the cars he might have with the Info on the car the owner's address maybe the bank that he still is paying for .Don't need to give up. Remember there is only a certain time limit u have to collect on a debt.. If you have more questions just email me.

Well if he owns property you can try placing a lien on the property. When it goes to sale you'll be paid then. If he files BK then there's a chance you won't get paid or at least you'll be one of the last few to be paid.
