How can I convince my mom to let me have a credit card or something like that (I'm 13 years old)?
I'm 13 years old and I'm turning 14 years old in a few months and I'm going to get my working papers work a job. I know it sound crazy that I want a credit card, but I need it to buy things online and other things. By the way, I know the legal age for a credit card is 18 years old, so I'm gonna ask my mom to co-sign it. And also my mom knows that I'm mature and responsible and I am. So I 'm going to be paying for probably all of the things I buy. I'm not the kind of person that's crazy about shopping and will spend A Lot of money, But please don't say that 13 year olds are too young to have a credit card because people are ready for one at different ages. So please leave some advice!!
Additional Details
Jnicole, its not illegal, if you are under the age of 18 and you want a credit card, you need to have your parents to cosign it. That way if you can't pay it off, your parents will be held responsible.

Just tell your mom that it's easier carrying less cash with you in your wallet while shopping and instead, having a card could be a lot more convienient. Also tell her that by having a credit card, you'll learn the importance of managing your money and spending it wisely. Also have your mom put a limit on your credit card such as $500 or $100 so you won't go crazy.

Get a prepaid Visa or open a bank account, they give you debit cards that you can use online.

I know how it must feel! I'm 15 and I can't have a cell phone! But just start by trying to open a bank account and go from there.

My suggestion - DO NOT get a credit card! If you need one - then buy only those with a fixed spending amount. once that amount is spent, they have become invalid and useless.

Get a DEBIT card. That way you can only spend what you have in your account..... and never owe any institution money.

Well if you feel that you would like to own an credit card then go for it. I am hoping that your mother will let you have one. But I do know that at your age is way too young to have one. But since you know that you have to pay for everything. Then I really do think that your mother should trust you on this one. But it is up to your parents.

But if you do have a bank account. Then you can use your bank card online. But if you don't have one then you can open one at the bank. That is how I get my things from Ebay. I use my debit card. So I am hoping that this has helped you out alot.

But good luck in getting a credit card,

Katherine Nemet

Get a "Pre-paid card", first. And then get a handle on what you are using it for. After you feel comfortable with this, discuss it with your parents, Let them guide you in the proper way to go. My daughters started with "Pre-paid Cards", now they have credit cards, keep their bills paid, and have the necessary things in life. But first of all, be very careful with your credit. If you mess up, it can haunt you the rest of your life.

If you do get a credit card. Then try not to over spend on it. It did happen to me in the past. So good luck in getting one. I do wish you the best. If your parents will co-sign for it. Then by all means go for it. But again try not to over spend okay. Right now I have set a limit with my bank account. I do stick with it.

Good luck,

April

Let me give you the best advice possible.

If you need to buy something online and use a credit card, then by all means, use your mother's credit card.

You may feel that you are mature enough to make your own purchasing decisions and manage your credit wisely, but we never outgrow the advice that our mothers can give us.

I was 36 years old when my mother passed-away, but let me tell you, even at that age, I was asking my mother what she thought of some of my buying decisions.

Let's face it. Today you are much more mature than you were 6 years ago (at age 7). In another 6 years, at age 19, you will have even more knowledge and maturity. Now then, how old is your mother? Think about how much she must know and understand.

In summary, if you need to buy stuff online, have your mother help you and use her credit card and you can pay her with cash. If she sometimes suggests that your purchasing decisions are not the greatest, perhaps you should listen to her and think about just how badly you need it.

1st and foremost....start with a bank account. Show how much you can be responsible that way. Most bank accounts you open up with give you a debit card that can be used as credit also. Follow up 6 months later if you have shown the ability to be responsible with the bank account. But first get the job !!! Then remember that once you do get a credit card be prepared to set aside your payments....example...a 3000.00 limit card if the minimun payment is made then it will take you close to 30yrs to pay off and estimated that your pay off would be around 30,000 because when making the min payment most of the payment goes to fiance charges. there are 2 types of credit ....revolving and installment... revolving is the worst...that's credit cards....remember that. and good luck with starting your credit history.

It's no legal age for CC. If you working and making money, you can get your CC in any age. Because you will start working, maybe will be a good idea to open first a Debit Card,
after you get your first check, bank will give you a DC and you can use same way as a CC, difference is you pay before you spend, and if you do responsible job for 1 year, bank will gave you few hundred $$ of Credit. I hope it helps. Good Luck!

actually you cant get a credit card in your name...you can be added as an authorized user. have them get you a green dot prepaid credit card...walgreens etc has them. works just like a credit card.

Probably ask her for a prepaid credit card or open a bank account for you that comes with a card and if you show responsibilty maybe she would actually get you an actual credit card.

YOU ARE WAY TO YOUNG!!!!!! you are not old enough to understand the complications from a credit card sorry to be acting like a mom but its true!

brandedcomb
Actually, 80 years old is also the WRONG age to have a credit card! The problem with credit cards is how much EXTRA everything you buy with them costs! When I found a seven thousand dollar truck I wanted, I used a credit card and the same truck ended up costing $12,000.00! Almost double is how it works out to... ALWAYS! Now, I keep one credit card with me in case I need to rent a car or get out of the rain, otherwise, even writing a check is full of problems! CASH is the way to go.
Until you can work legally, lawn cutting and baby sitting, and dog walking are easy ways to earn some cash!
Honestly, credit cards SUCK and people loose houses, cars and everything because they end up costing too much.
My dad told me something a long time ago that I DIDN'T care to do. Lately I did some math and if I had done this ONE SIMPLE thing, I would be RICH right now.
I was your age when he told me, "every time you earn money, put 10 percent away and don't touch it till your 40 years old".
10 cents each time you have a dollar. Not hard to do and you would end up RICH! I hope someone tries it!

Yayyer!!!
Yer too young!!!...also, you can not get one in yer name. Period.

You are a minor...you cannot enter into a contract without parental consent, and a credit card agreement is a contract. Personally, I wouldn't make my 20 year stepdaughter an authorized user on any of our cards, much less a 13 year old, who has no concept of paying bills or the value of a dollar. I know, not all 13 year olds are the same...I knew more than anyone else in the world when I was your age, also.

For what you claim you want to use it for, a prepaid DEBIT card will work just fine or a bank-issued spending card..works the same way. Don't be in such a hurry...real life and adulthood will be here sooner than you think, along with the responsibilities that go with it.

dbuitt22
At age 13 you do not need to get a credit card. You are minor and your mom is right.

JC
Ha! It's ILLEGAL! Your mom could get into trouble....would you want that?! Wise up and wait until you are older. YES 13 is TOO YOUNG to have a credit card. You have NO clue as to how big a responsibility it is. If you were my daughter, I'd say NO WAY and I hope your mom does too!!!!!!!!
