There are a few ways. You can get a prepaid Visa or Mastercard. You can also get a Direct Deposit Visa or Mastercard. And you can also get a Secured credit card, where you open a savings account with the bank that issues you the card, and the savings account funds are your security deposit on the card.

You can either get a secured credit card, or a debit card for your emergencies. I would also suggest you get credit counseling, and read some books on credit and money management, this will help you reevaluate your relationship with money. The last thing you want to do is get a secured or unsecured credit card and continue to destroy your credit. Take the time and look over your credit report, and try to resolve some of the things that are negative on your credit. Since you need a card for emergencies, then it would probably be better if you get a debit card. If you feel that you are ready and can handle credit, then apply for a secured credit card, which reports your payments with the credit bureau, this card will help you get back on track.

The Capital One student card helps people with limited credit. If you have bad credit like you say you can try the Orchard Bank card. Fees are a lot more reasonable than other programs for bad credit.

It will make your credit worse. You shouldn't do it. I know that is not a popular answer, but it is a truthful one. All forms of credit cards on someone with bad credit make the situation worse. Credit scoring firms see secured credit cards as a move of desperation. You are better off saving money and using that for emergencies. That way your credit score will improve on its own and you can eventually get a real credit card. |
