MrPibb | How can I get my Credit Card Company to give me a lower interest rate? |
Mine seems pretty high at 17.5% |

First of all, the easiest way to pay less in interest payments is to simply pay off the entire balance of the card every month. Most of the major credit card companies won't charge you any interest, or any fees as long as you keep the entire balance paid off on a month to month basis.
Sometimes you may run into unexpected expenses, or want to make a larger purchase on a credit card that you can't afford to pay off in the same month. Under these circumstances, you're going to have to expect to pay a little bit of interest. That doesn't mean there aren't other ways to save yourself a little bit of money though.
There are many ways to get lower interest rates listed here, it just takes a few phone calls and/or letters:

if you have a good history (on time, not exceeding credit limits over last 2-3 years), call them & ask them to lower it; you might need to threaten to cancel your card if they don't--and prepare to follow through with it |

I called mine and told them I was getting ready to do a balance transfer to another card if they didn't lower it, they lowered it for a period of time and it gave me enuff time to pay it off and saved a ton of money. |

Call and ask. If you have made your payments on time, they may give you a better rate. If you haven't made your payments on time, they probably won't. Good luck. |

Have you been making payments every month? How long have you been with your credit card company? Are you a good customer? If you can show that you are responsible and you don't use all of your credit, you can call and say "I am a good customer, and I wanted to see about lowering my interest rate, or I fear that I will have to go with another credit card company".
If you intend on going grocery shopping or buying gas, use the credit card, then at the end of the week add up how much it cost and pay it from your checking account. This way you are only using the credit card for money that you already have, not charging credit and you can't make the payment.
I do this and my interest rate is about the same, if not higher, and I don't pay that much each month in interest. Then again, I won't let them higher my amount of credit past like $600 because I fear that I will come up with something that I "need" and go spend it. If I don't have the money to pay for it out of checking, then I don't use the credit card.
Hope this helps. Good luck!

Just call and ask. If you are using the card and making your payments on time, they will almost always offer you a lower rate. If you are carrying a balance, explain that you got a balance transfer offer from another card and are tempting to do it because 17.5% is obnoxious.
If they say they can't lower it, ask to speak to a supervisor. Every time I have asked, they have been able to lower it, often under 6%. |

If you haven't needed a credit card up until people have been telling you that you need one, don't worry about it. You really don't 'need' one. The only reason that I got my credit card (aside to help with my credit score!) was for emergiencies-and that was at my family suggestion. I ended up applying for a card through my bank/federal credit union. They will be easier than any other place, especially if you have been with them for a while. Make sure you have NO annual fee. Aside from that, pick and choose.
