How can I help my GF eliminate her debt???
Basically, I just want to know how she can be helped. Paying the monthly min is really high right now. She said it was like $480/month which is really killing her.

I had thought about Debt Settlement America but that bogus system just screws up your credit and we want to buy a house in the future and her credit will be the one that fronts it. Anyway....

She said she would like to focus on one credit card which has $20k of debt on it and has the $480/month minimum payment, which is waaay too high.

Any advice on what she can do to lower the minimum payment or maybe cut the $20k of debt in half would be appreciated....

I was always told by finacial advisors to pay the minimum on all except the highest interest rate one and then what ever max you could put on it would get it paid off quicker thus reducing your money going for interest. Then as each one of highest interest gets paid off do the same with the next one. Soon you will be debt free. Hope this helps, good luck:-)

$20,000, hum. I wanted to suggest she look for a credit card with a real low interest rate and then use it to consolidate all of her credit card debts so there would be only one monthly payment to make. However, it's doubtful that anyone will give her a credit card with that limit. Like Suzie Orman would say--tell her to get two part time jobs and start paying off the credit cards.

She needs to cancel her credit cards. She has got to double her payment on the $20K debt. She should be paying $1000 per month to get rid of this.

Maybe the card provider would restructure the debt in terms of lowering the interest rate or freezing any further interest.

If she can't get her spending under control, when you buy a house, you'll lose it when you can't pay for her spening and the house too.

Frankly, I'd get a more responsible gf who is not a spending addict.

First off, don't put anything in your name.

Help her contact a credit counseling service or debt management plan (they are different from both debt settlement and debt consolidation).

And help her stay disciplined.

That's all you really should do because if you break up or something, you get stuck with her bills. Be careful with your information too because she could steal your identity.

Be careful. It isn't not love, it's caution.

You don't. She needs to get a job and transfer what ever debt she has to a lower interest rate plan.

well, i would just spend the money to pay it off, and if she has more than 2 cards. Cancel all of them but 2. And try very hard to stay below the spending limit. and pay it off immediatly when you get the bill. Because right now, her credit is not good at ALL. But if you do that i think you should slowly get it better

Call all of them and work out a payment plan and try to get your interest lowered or stopped.

Then, make the minimum payments on every one of them. On the lowest dollar value, put all your extra effort toward paying it off. Once it is paid off, then roll that extra money to the next largest balance. Continue this snowball until all your debts are paid off.

You probably need to cut your expenses back to the bare minimum. Get rid of cable, cell phones, internet, etc. Lower your electric bill, gas bill, water bill, etc. Don't eat at a restaurant until your debts are under control. Take a sandwich for lunch. Cancel the gym membership.

Try to increase your income by getting a second job. If you have a car with payments, get rid of it, and buy a good dependable used car for CASH.

Go to the library and get "The Total Money Makeover". Read it and follow it carefully.

Go check out Dave's website as well. Yahoo is blocking his site again, so take out the spaces in the following:

20K.... wow, your GF comes with serious baggage. In the end, I have a feeling you'll end up paying that debt. Get out while you can. Sorry for being blunt.
