How can I improve my Credit rating in order to get just one credit card?
There has been some sort of bad credit go against me due to a dispute I had with a lender a few years back. I have nevertheless settled all my debts in full but this bad credit rating still remains. I can apparently dispute this with agencies like experience but because of some technicality I am denied credit because of this.

Lets face it you cannot pay for ANYTHING with just a maestro/debit card overseas these days like hire a car or booking flights etc.

How can I get around this, so I can get just one credit card for essential business and personal use?

when you say you settled, I take it that means you have paid them now, not when they were due. therefore the credit history is correct, you paid late, therefore you will not get it taken off your report with experian etc.

I had same problem, but mine was a bankruptcy, so afterwards only had a cashpoint card from building society and needed to get something to allow me to pay for on-line purchases. I got a guarenteed credit card from Capital one (I had to pay £200 up front for a £200 limit). it came with rubbish interest rate but allowed me to re-build a decent credit history. I still keep it, and pay for my petrol on it. paying it off every month. I dont need it anymore but it is a handy one for budgeting

You can get a secured credit card at your bank. You can get a high fee card like Capital One or Orchard very easily. The latter appears to be a bit more friendly. You will pay annual fees and high interest if you are foolish enough not to pay the bill OFF each and ever month. Otherwise the rate of interest is not a real issue.

What is your credit score now? If you keep applying for credit and getting turned down, your credit cant be too good. If you dont have any outstanding debts, do you have any items appearing like a utility bill that is showing you paying late? Late pay's can knock your credit down too. Below is a link you can use to pull your credit...

You may need a credit boost while it still works to help you over the hump so you can get your own credit card. Do you know a family member who has a credit card from Bank of America that has been in good standing for over 2 years and the balance is under 30% of the limit? Ask them to add you to that card and bang... there is 20+ point right on your credit profile! Questions.. call Urban Credit 1-888-633-3317

To raise credit score

1. Always pay on time or ahead of time.
2. maintain low balances on credit cards
3.To boost your score: Don't charge anything for at least 60 days before applying for a loan
4. keep your total potential debt to earnings load low - If you have a card with a $15000 credit line, you may ask them to reduce it to something more realistic, like $5000.
5. You should have a recent history of both installment or term (Car or house loans) and revolving credit.
6.To boost your score: Don't close unused accounts when you transfer debt.
7.To boost your score: Consider opening another credit-card account or two, or taking out a car loan or small bank loan.

I spoke with a mortgage broker because I want to buy a house. He told me to help build my credit score to get a sesured credit card. I know bank of America offers this. You put a dep of min. of $300.00. Once you get the card make a $25.00 purchase ever month and pay it off once you get your bill. I hope this helps you.

there are a few things that can affect your credit rating. buying a house (believe it or not) will affect your credit rating badly for a start as so many people do credit checks on you (a mortgage advisor told us this) and moving address often also makes it bad.
your bank may be able to help you more than other companies as they can see your bank statements so will know better if you have the means to pay for anything that builds up on the card.
dont apply for too many things that need credit checks as if you are declined it is noted and makes it worse in itself!

Speak to your bank about your problems and see what they suggest. They might be able to provide you with a 'pre-pay' credit card where you add funds but cannot go into debt.

Try this site, it is for people just like you.

I had the same problem years ago when my wife left leaving me with debts i thought were paid. I got a Capital One card and improved my credit rating very quickly. I used it sensibly and now have a platinum card with them. They are a great company to work with and offer good advice.
