Most of the major car rental companies in the UK will rent you a car but it will be subject to a credit check and they will take a deposit from your debit card to cover any damage.
For the credit check you'll need to have a UK residence and good credit history.
It will make sense to arrange the rental in advance by visiting the location to make sure you pass the credit check. That way it will be quicker on the day and you'll have time to make alternate arrangements if there are any problems

Some places will take a debit card provided there are enough funds.

FYI car rental places will not take cash only. They REQUIRE a credit card or a debit card with enough funds to cover all costs including a deposit. That is how they protect their asses. Try and rent a hotel room these days and not either have to have a credit card or have to pay a deposit if you pay cash. People like to damage stuff and companies have to protect themselves.

You can call some of the car rental places to see if they will take the debit card. You can also see who has the best rate for the size car you want to rent. Don't take the first offer keep calling around. I have had good luck with Enterprise. They will bring the car to you. If you rent from an airport location some of them charge and additional fee.
It seems that car rental businesses are the only ones who can refuse cash.
Go figure?
Good luck!

I rented a car with cash up front. In Australia, not UK, but I expect it would be the same situation for you.

debit cards are excepted by a lot of hire car companies,or go on line and pre pay and book ,you can then use your debit card

If you are legal age and have no credit established, you should consider getting a credit card (even a secured card) for that reason. Do not choose one with an annual fee and even though you get one, you don't have to use it... just activate it and let it sit on your credit history. A good place to start is Orchard Bank, HSBC, or Capital One but check out BankRate below. In many cases you can apply online TODAY.

Nearly all car rental firms require you to have a credit card i am afraid.

kt
buy a 3v voucher its a prpaid credit card ...
u just but the amount of credit put it on your voucher ...then use it the same way as you would a normal credit card..
anywhere that accepts visa or any type of credit card will accept a 3v card..
or could use cash , or money order...

Simple, pay cash up front. You can buy anything using this method.
