You can start by pulling your credit report form all three credit agencies which are Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion. You can find out how to obtain these for free annually at the U.S. Government website at Federal Trade Commission. Then, follow these simple guidelines to help restore and improve your credit score.

First, make sure all the information on your credit report is accurate.

Second, try to pay off all or any accounts that are currently in collections or make payment arrangements with the creditor to pay off the balance monthly.

Third, any credit card that is over 50% of the available credit line should be paid down to under half of your total credit line. Your credit score is lowered when your available balance is over 50% of your total credit line.

Finally, if you have bad or no credit and have no credit cards try to obtain two credit cards and make sure all of your monthly payments are made on time. This will help increase your credit score. If you cannot be approved for a unsecured credit card, obtain a secured credit card.

It depends how you want to go about it. The honorable way is very simple....not fast, but simple.

First you become debt free. That means you pay every current and past due account to a zero balance. If you have a collection agency collecting on a six year old past due account, pay it in full. This means no debt except your house payment.

After you become debt free, you open a few credit cards and responsibly use them. Responsibly means you use them as a convenience, and not a loan. That means you pay them in full every single month. Never ever carry a balance.

I followed this simple plan, and have achieved a 780 FICO score. That's not to mention the good feeling I always have inside because I'm debt free.

You can put your credit cards away or even cut them up so you don't use them, and set a goal of how much out of each paycheck will go to the credit cards. If you can keep adding to the amount every day. Make a spreadsheet that will show you how long it will take that way you have something to look at and now that you will be debt free.

Pay back everything that is owed and continue to pay everything on time. It will get better as long as all the negative aspects are off your history.
