You can stop a debt collector from contacting you by writing a letter to the collector called a "Collection Agency Cease and Desist Letter". Once the collector receives your letter, they may not contact you again except to say there will be no further contact or to notify you that the debt collector or the creditor intends to take some specific action. The debt will likely be sent back to the original creditor and/or re-sold to another collection agency, at which point you send a new Cease and Desist letter to the new collector.
There is also a statute of limitations on debt collections, which varies from state to state. There is a listing of all state statutes and a sample Cease and Desist letter on the following website:

In response to the first advise of sending a "Collection Agency Cease and Desist Letter," this can work but be careful....If this debt is only two years old, it will be within the Statue of Limitations regardless of what state you live in....If this debt is large enough, sending a "Cease and Desist" letter might provoke more aggressive action, such as their filing a lawsuit....so be careful. |

A cease and desist will probably get you sued. Collection agencies are going to court for smaller amounts.
It also is NOT true that you can go back to the original creditor and don't have to deal with the collection agency. Unless these debts are less than 6 months old, they were likely sold to the collection agency and you will have to deal with them.
When they call, are they leaving messages or do they actually speak with your? If they speak with you, there are rules on the frequency they can call you. However, if they are leaving messages and you don't return the call, that's a different story.
The best way to get them off you back, is to work out a settlement agreement. Get a copy of your credit report (AnnualCreditReport.com). Start with the newest derogatory item and work back -- the older the item, the less impact on your score. Ask for delete for payment. Some will, some won't.
If the debt is 2 or 3 years old, offer 50%; over 3 years old, offer 25%. Lump sum gets the best deal. Payment plans have to be short term. Get it in writing and keep it, along with your payment proof, forever. Don't give the collection agency direct access to your bank account. |

Simply pay the debts....if you don't they would take you to court, so its better to pay the debts. If you are not able to manage your debts you can go for debt consolidation. They would guide you in planning your debts and would thereafter provide you an affordable debt management plan. So through that you can clear your debts within some years depending upon your amount of debts.

When they call you tell them that you're interested in setting up a payment plan to pay off the debt. Once you're on a payment plan they won't bug you. |

if you have their address send them a cease and desist letter stating you will only deal with the original creditor of the account. |
