EvilAngel | How can I stop compulsive shopping? |
I am in debt because of shopping, I maxed out my credit cards and now I borrow money to go shopping, and I buy things I don't even need, I feel better after shopping, it's like a high or something. |

I went through the same thing. I listed a few things I did in helping me recover from compulsive buying. Keep in mind, beating this habit takes time. You will fall off from time to time.
First, agree that you have a shopping problem. Realize this problem is bigger than you can handle. Seek assistance. Family and friends are fine, but sometimes they can be enablers. Alcoholics cannot be around those who drink (even socially). Stop hanging around those who habitually shop. Friends that go to the mall every weekend for those one or two little things can be damaging to your recovery.
Second, see if you can put your credit card accounts on hold. Do not cancel the account as it can raise your interest rates. See if the credit companies can do this service without any fees or raising your interest rates. Even if you do not physically have the card, you can still use it through online retail (especially if your card is on file).
Third, get a productive hobby. Are you a student? Have you been meaning to finish college? This is the time to do it. If you are a part-time student, try going fulltime. If you dropped out of college, go back. Is your New Year’s resolution to lose a few pounds or have the perfect body for summer? Go to the gym or head to the local high school/college and run a few laps.
Fourth, make the transition from compulsive buying to compulsive credit payments. In other words, try to get your high from paying more than the minimal payment or paying your balances off.
Finally, look into getting another job. If your debt is as bad as your shopping addiction, you need to do more than just cutting back. A second job will not only generate more revenue for paying the balances, it will also keep you busy. |

it's an addiction and our society is addicted to credit. cut up all of your cards as they will be the death of you, and seek credit counselling or even seek therapy. don't wait - do it now, you could ruin things for life. |

attatch an ellectrode to all your cards. everytime you swipe it, you get a nasty shock. You will stop spending all together. No more of those cute shoes, no more matching handbags, no more fast food restaurants. Hey, you might even be able to drop a size or two!!! |

I know what you mean although my problems are not out of hand. You need to first settle all of your debt - go see a financial advisor and figure it out and stick to it - you may be unhappy now but you'll feel ten times worse if you get further in debt. Then you need to avoid temptation - no malls or stores for you except the grocery store. If you do not see it (and that includes online and flyers) you will not crave it so much. I completely understand the thrill of having something new but you know as well that once you have it a day or two you really dont feel that way anymore. Return all the things you bought recently. |

What you have described is definitely an addiction. This is something you need to get professional help for. I know it might sound strange but it is similar to other addictions such as gambling and drugs. You need to seek professional help. You can start by describing your problem to your family doctor or psychiatrist. They will lead you in the right direction and refer you to some specialists or a place to go for re-hab.
Good luck :) |

OMG!
Are you THE Sinnocence from Nashville???
I don't think you are.. but in case you are I'm your #1 fan!
Compulsive shopping.. that used to happen to me, what I did was buy everything I wanted.. be happy for a few days.. then return it since I really didn't need those things, then go on new shopping sprees, then return.. I'm sure you get the idea.
Eventually I got tired of waiting at the return lines every Wednesday and my compulsive shopping syndrome was gone! |
