How can Kohl's do this?
When I usually return things to a store without a receipt, I usually am able to walk away with either cash or a gift card, and it's always what I paid for it unless whatever I bought went down in price and I have to settle for the new sale price. Well, I received a $36 shirt from Kohl's for Christmas this year and I wanted to return it to get something else I needed. The price tag and stickers were still ojn the shirt, but since I received it as a gift, I didn't have the receipt. Anyway, when I went to return the shirt at Kohl's, I was taken back when the guy told me that he could only give me $14 for the shirt, w/o a receipt....for a $36 shirt! It's obvious WHY they do this, but what's the deal?! Needless to say, it is reason enough for me to not want to shop there anymore. Can anyone explain why this business practice is done? Is there a re-stocking fee of more than 50% of the value of the returned item or something? I think it's BS.

I work at kohls. Kohl's NEVER sells an itemfor the regular sale price unless its a buy 1 get one free event.

What happens is the person who got it for you didnt get it for 36. they can boast nd say they did to let u think they cared so mch about to get u an expensive shirt.

So without a reciept you know store policy is you only get the amount of the shirt that its worth that day you return it. unless you track down the person who got you a gift and the reciept.

You will get a KMRC card which is Kohl's merchandize return credit to use instore.

its like a gift card only it never expires.

so, yea. if you want keep checking online and see the price of the item. when the price its on sale for is good enough for you find out whent hat sale ends and go to kohls to return it before the sale ends to get that sale price that is good ennough to you.

Also, this is B3MR2's fiance. I use his account nd help boost up his points when hes too busy to beon here. ^^

If you return something without a receipt, most stores generally give you the most recent sale price.

If Kohl's only gave you $14 back on a shirt that originally would have cost $36, then I'd have to assume that the same shirt was recently on sale for $14. (Which wouldn't surprise me - Kohl's runs a lot of sales...seems like they have a big one every week.)

I don't think it was a re-stocking fee - I think its just that the shirt must have been on sale. But if you want to find out for sure, certainly their official return policy must be documented somewhere? (Posted in store, on the corporate website, etc.)

Some stores have a policy to give you a refund equal to the lowest price the item has sold for. It does make sense on a business level. Otherwise, how would the store know if they are losing money by refunding more than an item was purchased for?

Scotty Doesnt Know
It's not that at all.

The receipt is your proof not only of the purchase, but of the purchase amount. The refund that they are offering you is the lowest price the shirt was offered for. The price tag doesn't prove what you actually paid for it, since many times the sale price is "x% off the tagged price." Without proof of the actual purchase price, they can only offer you the lowest possible price on the garment. This is to protect the store against losses.

You may or may not agree with this. However, your question asks if anyone can explain why this practice occurs, and I've attempted to do that here.

no receipt means you will get the current cost of the item...not a Kohl's-only issue...most stores have that policy

:)
How do you know it was a $36 shirt? Possibly it was on sale at the time you returned it which means if you don't have a receipt you are given the sale price.

Due to so much customer abuse, many stores have tightened their return policy. I'm surprised they offered you anything without a receipt. There aren't many stores that will take something back without a receipt.

Many stores restrict returns even with a receipt to so many a year or only up to a certain amount.

This is precisely the reason why I never return anything that my Mother-in-Law gives me, because I'm sure when she goes to a sale, not only does she get something on sale but on the clearance rack and they tack on a geezer discount...in the end she probably paid $2.00 for the tacky blouse in the wrong size and the equally tacky and grossly irregular pants that match that she gives me on my birthday.

Having cheap in-laws sucks.

Most stores usually only give you back the lowest price of the shirt in the last 30 days when you don't have a receipt. Since it was just the Christmas season, Kohl's probably had some big sales on the shirts which took the sale price down that low.

Thats why its always smart to include gift receipts around Christmas since prices are always driven down because of sales.

Since is a gift (not sure why people left price tag on when is a gift) how do you know they really paid $36 for it. i am sure they only pay $14 for it and that is what showed up at Kohl's computer system as the price paid. Do you think store will give you credit for more that it was paid? NOT!!! So don't make such big stink out of it. You think about it...

mickey g
most places will give you the lowest price of the item, usually within the last 60 days. so it might have been on sale some time recently. this protects the company because someone might buy it when its on sale, then come back to return it when its full price again, the store will then lose money.

knowing khols, it was probably just a shirt they had marked down a lot. they do that with a lot of their stuff.

just to help prove this point, i bought a book from overstock.com for my mom's BF this christmas. he recieved the same book from his daughter, who got it from amazon.com. so he took the book i gave him, and brought it back to barns & nobles, knowing full well that i got it on-line. he got back the lowest price they've had it for (last month it was $19), which was cheaper then it would have been for me to mail it back to overstock.com and wait for a refund. cheated the stores, yes, but now they can sell it for the new higher price that it is.

Yes, all the previous posters are correct. That is why, when I purchase an item I know to be a gift, I request a gift reciept and include it in the gift box in case the reciever wants or needs to return or exchange it. The person you got the shirt from may be able to give you the original reciept if it's still available....

I used to work at Kohls and thats just what they do, they wont give you full refund without a receipt.

Sharon F
well the one thing that you need to keep in mind that the tag may say $36 but it may have been on sale and that's why he's telling you that he can only give you back $14

The person who gave it to you probably got it on the clearance rack at 60% off

so i wouldn't make too much of a stink about it

Without a receipt, how can the store know whether it was bought on a sale. They have to assume it was sold at the lowest price. Yes, it's a rip-off for the returnee, but at least you get something. Target won't let you return or exchange at all without a receipt of some sort. I try to exchange whenever possible without a receipt, so at least I get a like-value item that's also on sale.

I received a top which was I believe $34.00. We just had our Christmas due to a family member being in the hospital and the whole family wanted to wait for Poppa to get home befor we did Christmas. As I received the top later in the season, and it didn't fit, I brought it back to Kohls and would only give me back $6.00! I kept it to give to someone else or a charity rather than accept that low a return price. Shouldn't I have received more than $6.00?
