jackpiza | How can a charge-off be removed from my credit report? |

You can challenge/dispute it, and if they do not reply within a certain time period it is removed.
Otherwise, you have to wait until it falls off (7 yrs) |

Follow Credit Guru's advice.
I'll add that you must keep accurate logs of who you call, copies of letters, and maintain copies of everything they send you.
Send all letters certified mail. It's not necessary to get return receipts because all you need to show is you mailed it. Tracking info to show it was delivered is available on the web. Trust me, it will save you a lot of money in postage.
I've supplied some links that you will find helpfull. Study the links, learn the laws! Knowledge is your only weapon. Don't fight these jerks unarmed! |

I would need to know more specifically as to what type of account (credit card, Collection, etc.) and how old it is as to provide a specific action, but here is the general method on negative information on a credit file.
The Fair Credit Reporting Act(FCRA) states that you have the right to dispute anything on your credit report that you believe is inaccurate. Send a letter of dispute to the 3 credit bureaus. You will have to wait approx. 30 days for them to complete their investigation. If it is removed then you have been successful. If not you will either have to pursue a debt validation strategy(works best for Collection Agencies) or neqotiate a settlement (if you have the money to settle) including a written agreement from them to remove or correct their reporting. |

I had a similar situation. The bank cashed my mortgage check, didn't credit my account, and reported me as a delinquent payer.
When I contacted the Bank, I got through to a VP, who corrected the mistake and sent copies of that corrected report to me and each of the three credit reporting agencies.
If the organization you are dealing with does not contact the credit reporting agencies on your behalf, contact Equifax, Experien and TransUnion directly. They each have an online form for reporting and resolving these issues. |

If it is correct, you have to pay it off. If you did not pay it because you dispute that you owe it or you dispute the amount, you can put an explanation in your credit report. Or wait 7 years and they have to take it off. |

If it is wrong dispute it with the credit bureau. But if it is legitimate then you may just have to wait until it goes off. |
