Go into your bank and ask to open a new Visa card with only $200 or $300 limit (if they will open them that low). Know in advance that anything you buy on that card MUST be paid for in full when you get your statement. It cannot be late, it cannot be short paid. It must be the whole amount paid immediately. after 6 months to 1 year, you will then have your own excellent credit rating. Then you can ask to increase your visa limit to perhaps $1000. Never have a limit that exceeds what you can realistically pay for immediately and in full. This is how credit ratings are created. |

Make sure you have a clean bank account, where you never have even one bounced check. Ask them if you can get a small loan for say $500 - parents can co-sign. Make sure you make ALL payments on time to the bank - maybe just a 6 month loan. Otherwise you can usually apply for a credit card with a deposit they keep - that way they know you will not miss any payments. The deposit ends up being refunded once your history is established. |

There are sharks just waiting for you!
Don't fall for the credit card schemes unless you honestly understand the fine print.
You do need bills to pay to establish good credit, but they can be small bills.
Get a store credit card from a place you actually need stuff from. Buy something not too costly and pay it off in 3 payments. Do this at several stores. NEVER be late!
Paying your bills on time is how you get the "good points".
Good luck! |

When I was 18, Capital One gave me a Mastercard with a $250.00 limit because I planned on going to college. Go to their website and apply for their student card. It is the same as any other, but geared so that it helps quickly earn you some credit. There aren't even any fees for your cards...I won't list the website so that you can find it on your own and know it is not a scam.
Capital One is widely known...
Good Luck! |

One way that's helped me (in the same situation) is by having the parent's or a legal guardian or another family member co-sign on your loan - there are loans that are specially designed for transactions between family members. It shows up in the credit reports later. Building credit apparently takes a while: try opening a low-interest rate debit or credit card (but pay attention to the interest rates and the monthly dues for credit cards; debit cards = almost like gift cards). Your school's financial aid/student services offices should have info about grants and no-interest loans and other specialized Federal/state aid info for students who are just establishing a line of credit. Good luck! |

start by applying for credit at some department store cards. the easiest credit to get for me was at a building center card. you will establish a credit report this way. then you will be getting more offers in the mail. use a few and keep a good payment record . |

Find a credit union that you can qualify to join. Then take out a trial loan. Repay it, and take out a larger one and repay that one. Make sure you don't miss a payment and you will begin to earn your own credit history, which is good.
If you can't, find someone to co-sign a loan with you as the primary. You can begin a credit history as long as you repay. but, you have to find someone who trusts you. |

Start with a deposit-based credit card, as this builds, so will your credit. Please beware, many Institutions will lure you via mail (because of your age). My 18 year-old daughter fell victim to one of the companies offering her $10,000+ credit. They got her on the phone to "activate" her account, a week later, they had used her information the deduct $250.00 from her account for the "privilege" of this so called credit |
