if nothing else, then open a savings-type account (one without a cheque book). That will establish you as a bona-fide customer. Then ask to upgrade your bank account after six months or so.

Once you can get a debit card & cheque book, you should be Ok for further credit.

apply for a credit card and when you use it and when you receive your bill make sure you pay the bill on time. Don't be delinquent on your payment.

Credit scores take time. To increase your credit score you must display certain spending habits.
Since you're just 21 and you're starting out and you don't have credit basically.
You can start out with a secure credit card, no one gets dissapproved for that. Orchard bank, part of HSBC, provides secure credit cards with a min. deposit of $250.00. It will take 6 months. You'll have a credit line of let's say $1000.00.
Only use 20%- $200 (NEVER MORE) of your credit card within the 6 months.
You get a statement, you pay it off, you should be good and you will be building your credit score.
Do not apply for credit cards all at one time, because it seems suspicious to the federal bureau and you can screw up your credit score before you even start building it up.

I'd never recommend a credit card really, unless you're really good with personal finance and understand what is asked of you to be on the safe side. I'd say work your butt off for the next 5 or 6 years and buy the house in cash.
If you're not OK with putting in a deposit of 250 with orchard you can always apply for the Citibank MTVU card, sponsored by MTV, for university students.
They love students in debt, so they are always welcoming students with no credit score, but that's where i built my score up.
They might initially offer you a credit line of $800.00, don't get too excited, just remember...

Credit Cards will be paid back, it is not your money. You're just borrowing. So think of it that way.
Good luck

been in this situation b4 wen i was 21 yrs old.1st get a job.2nd open a checking account(prefer bank of america they offer $300.00 credit limit 4 no credit yet,I had one b4).3rd don't apply 4 a credit card u don't want to b n a situation dat wuld compromise ur credit unless ur really responsible wid ur money,& if u really want to get a credit card, either apply at orchardbank.com(since they report gud on time payment every 6 months,it's for no credit, bad credit, gud credit people) or the bank wer u opened ur checking account.personally i shouldn't hav gotten a credit card, my 1st credit card i screwed up.so now i'm starting over again with orchardbank wer they gave me a limit of $200.which is gud since i'm making on tym payments.dats y i'd advise u not to get a credit card personal xperience, but hey if u want to build ur credit go ahead but stick on ur timely payment and usage of the credit card & oh yeah having a car dat u pay on time will also really bolster ur credit rating.1 card is gud enough. it's better 2 hav a no credit history dan to hav a bad credit.gud luck! ^_^

Get a loan, then pay it off, in full, immediately.

I can't believe you can't open a bank account! Unless you have no money to put in it, of course.
