Get a Capital One Premium Standard credit card.
(www.capitalone.com >>>> then click credit cards up top>>> see if youre pre-qualified on the bottom right).
You can have what they best call people with no credit ("limited history") and still get one. As long as you qualify, you can sign up and have that puppy in your hands in 5 days.Plus, it has 0% APR until June 2009...which means 0% interest on your balance from any purchases you make. But before you do make sure that you have means to pay for anything you may charge. If you do, go for it. Then when you get the card, activate it, and go buy something small with it. When the statement comes in the mail at the end of the billing period, be sure to pay it off. Then, after youve paid off the small amount, charge something a little bit bigger, and when that statement comes, pay that off. Do that once more, and by that time (after 3 months of paying off your total credit line), you will have established good credit. If you don't want it anymore, just call up the 1-800 number to the credit card company and tell them that you want to cancel your account...after everythings been paid for...and then they will cancel your account, and that makes it time for you to cut up your card and throw it away. Just make sure you don't make yourself in debt by doing this. A lot of people misuse credit cards. Also, you can only be eighteen or older to get a credit card, so if you aren't at least eighteen, don't even try it. One more thing - be sure that whatever card you choose has a very low APR. If it has a high one, your purchases will be much more expensive when you get the statement in the mail than you expected, and what you thought you mightve been able to pay, may become a whole hell of a lot more than you actually can pay. Good Luck. Hope this helps. |

Open a credit card. Buy things with the credit card and pay the amount in FULL and ON TIME! |

Easiest way is to buy a piece of jewelry. Jewelers are eager to give you credit on your first small piece and you can build from there. |

Usually a good starting place is a secured card.
Bank of America has a good program that allows you to graduate to an unsecured card in a year or less if you establish a good history and you can add to your credit line by adding money to your secured account
Citibank has a program specifically for people with no credit, you deposit money in an 18 mo CD, that is equal to your credit line and secures your card. The downside in my opinion is that you can't add additional money to increase your line during that 18 months. (btw the money is FDIC insured)
Other banks woth good secured card programs are
Orchard Bank (you might be able get an unsecured card with them)
National City
US Bank
Wells Fargo |

Some good advice from other with the exception of the cell phone. They will only report to the bureaus if your account goes to collections.
Credit card is the best and easiest way to start. If you do this you need to pay in full every month. Never carry a balance over to the next month. It might be hard to get one with bad credit, no credit is nearly the same as bad credit. Try a store card like JcPenny or Sears or any of them will do. Another thing to try is a secured credit card from your bank. That also works well and since it is not tied directly to a store you can use it anywhere. After about a year of on time payments and generally keeping your account in good standing, try for a small personal loan from your bank. Nothing big, $1000 would be more than enough. You just want to show that you are able to make regular payments on a schedule and are able to handle different types of credit (credit cards are revolving credit and personal, auto, and home loans are installment loans). Again, make the regular payment EARLY and then pay it off a few months early. It would be a good idea to have the money saved up to pay off the loan in the case you get into some trouble financially. You do not want to lose all of your hard work because of a rough spell. Just remember that you not only want a good score, but a healthy report. Creditors look at your report as much as or more than your score. It will take time to build but can be torn down very quickly. Late payments (by 30 days or more), going over you credit limits, applying for unecessary credit, and other actions can and will harm you. Just use it judiciously and pay on time and you should be fine.
Live within your means. Never carry a balance. Do not make money the center of your life. |

Get a credit card and pay the balance EVERY MONTH.
Buy something on payments and pay the payments on time EVERY MONTH. Maybe a piece of furniture or a TV. Maybe a car.
It will take a few years to have all this translate into a really good credit score. |

It bothers me a bit that all these ppl are suggesting you get a credit card or a cell phone. Credit cards are NEVER a good idea. You think you'll pay the balance in full, but unless you have a plan in place(i.e., savings, emergency fund, etc.) when emergency does strike you'll be whipping out the plastic. And a cell phone is a good way if you can afford it. But start out with a smaller, inexpensive plan. Pay all your doctor bills on time, car insurance, rent, etc. This ALL contributes. Good luck. |
