Nomad | How can you find out if there is a warrant out for your arrest? |
I currently live overseas, and have unpaid credit cards/loans/ and bank overdrafts outstanding in the UK. I have not had any contact regarding this since leaving the UK. I need to return to the UK for a business trip how can I find out if a warrant has been issued in my absence?

You might try doing a public records search on yourself. A lot of online companies offer this service. There is normally some charge involved with it. Also, another thing you might want to do is do a credit check and see what the credit report says. This may give you a general idea of what has become of these debts. The length of time involve should have some bearing on your situation also. GOOD LUCK |

i'm hoping to do the same as you ;)
i've done this a couple of times before and know a few friends who have done this in the past too.
If the debt is over six years old they cannot, by law, pursue it. It probably gets written off after 2 or 3 years.
If the debt was only a couple of G's then I wouldn't get too worried. If you went round buying Ferrari's and 15 carat diamonds on credit then they might be a bit more interested.

It is not a criminal offence to owe money on a credit card and you cannot be arrested.
Its a civil matter.
You can check whether you have been made bankrupt as www.insolvency.gov.uk but as others have said this is unlikely.
However you need to be aware that debts can follow you overseas nowadays. Banks are multinational and there are over 40 countries with reciprocal arrangements with England and Wales. |

if you have committed a crime..... probly so,
if you missed a court date.......probly so
if you havent paid child support in months probly so,
if you fled the scene of a crime that was committed by people with you....probly so
if you have violated your probation....probly so.
if you have answered yes to more than one of these statements then you probly have a one way ticket to the slammer
but if its just unpaid debts....as long as you havent went on a bad check writing spree then you should be fine, the only thing they can do is take you to court and sue you, and if you dont show up for a lawsuit you can have a warrent issued for your arrest so its best to just call the court house and reschedule your court date other wise creditors cannot press criminal charges unless you write a high dollar bad check. |

Call a police station.....tell them who you are....and have them check it for you. Alot of times if you turn yourself in they will go easy on you. |

Most departments will not release warrant information via telephone most policy is for you to go in person to the department and ask if you have a warrant on you. You must go in person no one else can go for you or can call for you. It's better to go ahead and take care of this because even if you dont have a warrant on you your paychecks can be garnished by 1 credit card co at a time. Trust they took 300 + out of every paycheck of a family member of mine until it took him filing bankruptcy tostop.hope this helps. |

They do not arrest you for debts, unless they can prove there was fraud involved (very unlikely).
They don't toss people in prison for debts. That's just one of the many lies collection agents tell you. |

It's very unlikely there'll be a warrant out for your arrest for what's presumably just a few grand. It's more likely the banks will have written it off as a bad debt. |

If it's anything like the USA You can find out by contacting Warrant Control something we have here. Basically you can call the UK's Law Enforcement and ask them if they have a Warrant Control Telephone number you would like to find out if a warrant has been served. They will ask you for the person's name. Or just ask them how do you go about finding out if a warrant has been served don't ask then if there is warrant out for arrest they may become suspicious. |

Normally there wont be a warrants issued for your arrest for bad debt unless there is proof of fraud. You dont go to jail for bad debt.
However, I have had cases wherein a summons to appear for things like "debtor examination" was served, etc. Subject did not appear in court. The judge does issue bench warrants for that. But thats not because of the bad debt...its cause you were summoned to court and didnt show up. |
