You can start with a Capital One card, although, they are not the greatest card, if you are careful about it, then it will serve the purpose, they are good for building credit, or try HSBC credit cards, those are 2 companies that will help build credit. Remember, they are not the worlds greatest cards, but they will serve the purpose. |

Forget the $200. credit cards - they won't be sufficient to influence a home mortgage lender in this market.
You need real credit. To get that, you have to borrow serious funds and pay them back. There is a way to do this without having credit.
All you have to do is borrow funds to hold on deposit. Make interest payments on the loan for a while, then give back the deposited loan proceeds to the lender, paying off the loan.
If you agree to just hold the borrowed funds on deposit, you can borrow large amounts at less than 5% interest, without a credit check at all, at creditloader dot com. Do a few accounts like this and you will have a serious credit record. Just make sure you can afford the payments or it would backfire.
If you are going to buy a house, you will need the down payment. If you need to show the down payment before you have it on deposit, you can use the deposit created from one of these loans, then pay off the loan with your own money later. This lets you move the seasone, deposited money into your escrow for the purchase of your house. |

You'll have to get a credit card with a really low limit. Probably around $100 to start. You'll probably be able to get a few. Just be sure to pay the balance off completely each month. Don't just pay the minimum each month, pay the whole balance each month. I'd talk to someone in the mortgage business to find out other ways to build your credit to their liking. Hey, at least in your position it'll be easy to spot if someone steals your identity:) |

its the same for anyone who arrive in the US from abroad. No credit history= no credit, and difficult to get on the ladder. You need to build up a history slowly. worst thing is to keep trying at lots of places, as it also looks bad on your report. catch 22. Sucks i know.
Try at Mervyns for a store card first, and if successful, keep up with payments. Also see if your bank issues credit cards. If they know you already it might be a bit easier. then just wait unfortunately. good luck |

What i had to do was get a car
after 3 mo of a good payment history, had a little credit just enough to be listed .
after six mo better credit , that when i applied with target and got it and the same day jcpenny got it and then a couple days latter with Kohl's got. Now it been a month and 3 credit cards later and I can't get any no sears gap none of them
so I no for a fact the it will show every 3months of reporting.
and this if for the post on top by AFK
Don't every pay off the balance or it will take longer be established
just never use more than half of the credit line and pay on time you can allways pay a little more |

I ditto Misha's answer but I find it interesting that instead of tryng to help people with credit issues our credit issues actually give credit at a higher rate to people who have already shown they have problems with credit. So that means that people who have less to spend get charged more to use creditor's money then people who have more to spend. This makes no sense to me but that is probably why I'm not running things. I have to wonder, though, how our government which is suppose to be working for 'us' allowed this...
just another quandry..... |

Hi,
I remember thinking that same question when I first started out on my own. Now, years later, I am in debt up to my eyeballs. How I wish someone would have pulled me aside and taught me earlier what credit truly is and how to use - or NOT use it.
Think about it this way - the whole reason to get credit and have a good credit score is so that you can borrow and use MORE credit. Since you haven't yet started using credit - stay away from it! It is a lie that we are told from lenders that we need credit cards and good credit. Not true! There was a time when most people used cash for everything, and for those that couldn't - they saved until they had the money for it.
Remember - credit card companies make money off the interest they charge you and late/overlimit fees - and the more you are in debt, the more money they make. This is why they send applications to everybody - even kids and pets! My advice is to say, 'You go girl - keep living like you have been without credit'. You really don't need it - for those of us who use it, most of us are broke. (But my hubby and I are working hard - literally- to free ourselves from it and are now using cash - whoo!) |

That's a tough one. When you have NO credit, the banks that will lend you the money or issue you a credit card are going to charge you lots. There is no way around it. Try the link below. Good luck. Make sure to go over all the fees...usually start-up fees are about $179, but if you want a credit card and to start building some credit, this may be a good place to start. Pay all of your bills on time ~ that is 35% of your credit score. |
