The bank said to come in and cancel my card and when they checked pending authorizations and charges there were a ton more. Like from E-Bay which I don't use, yahoo kids, western union. Annie ... Something similar happened to me. I wanted to ask my credit card provider how that might have happened. I wanted to know whether I had done anything wrong. However, they politely declined to give me many details. I think they don't like to discuss the various weaknesses that are inherently part of the system. To make things as convenient as possible for you, the legitimate account owner, they open themselves up to a certain amount of thievery, unfortunately.
How did your info get compromised? The scam artists might have just guessed or someone may have obtained your personal info from one of the businesses you had dealings with and their data security standards may be weak.
Even a lender who has routine access to the databases of the credit agencies may have a dishonest employee who periodically obtains personal data from innocent people at random.
As the system presently works, completely stopping this kind of fraud is impossible. However, keeping vigilant and watching your accounts is the best defense.

Your card has probably been cloned. This can be done anywhere the card is not in your view, with a minimum of equipment (basically just a magnetic strip reader connected to a laptop and an imprint machine).
The card is swiped through the reader, which sends the data it reads from the card to the laptop. An imprint of the card is taken to make sure the details stamped into the face match those on the strip.
The criminals who made the duplicate card then sell it to someone (normally, but not always) far from where you live.
My advice is to check your account thoroughly for more transactions you did not make - prior to the one in Italy. If you find any more, notify your bank immediately (although it may already be too late to recover the funds). You should also notify the police, if you (or the bank) havn't already done so. |

Spyware on public computers can steal the info. Also, some dishonest merchants, restaurant employees sell your info that they get when you use your card. You were smart to keep an eye out on your credit card bill. |

check your wallet..did you "lose" your debit card at a ATM?
you should immeditaly file a police report for ID theft, then call
the credit card bureau and them to place a fraud alert
on your account |

You've got a case if identity Theft.
good job on acting fast to cancel your card, that was very smart and you saved a lot work for yourself.
all i can say is be careful what you throw away (SHRED ALL PERSONAL PAPERS when you don't need them anymore, ALL OF THEM)
and continue to keep an eye on your credit reports to act fast if it happens again. |

Could have been someone sending something saying they are your bank and wanted you to type in the number to verify your account. Or could be from a store you used the card at got hacked and they got your number that way. Either way best to cancel it and get a new one. They could have gotten it through an atm too. |

when you pay by phone or give your card to waiters and other people who take your card and then come back they can copy your card number and then sell it or use it |

Been to any restaurants lately? You pay for a meal, they walk away with your card, write down the details and come back with your receipt... Later that night, they go online and go shopping. Pretty simple. |
