Dark and Lovely | How do I build better credit from bad credit? |
I am trying to get out of my bad credit slump from when I was younger and just went crazy with my credit cards. Now that I am older I am trying to start over. I have about 4 or 5,000 in Credit card debt. I cannot afford to just pay all of that but, is there a way to get myself back on track. I am looking to get another apartment but, have been turned down because I have judgements from these credit cards. I also have like some other small things on there and also, some old credit cards that I have paid and closed. Can I get my credit back in good standing or am I just doomed with bad credit? |

Get a part-time job and you'll pay that debt off in a very short time. It will be a great relief to you. Hopefully you still have open credit card accounts and will be more responsible, but if not, opening another account, even a prepaid account, is still one of the best ways to improve your credit score. By that I mean consistently charging and paying off each month does wonders to your score.
Go to www.creditboards.com to learn how to improve your score. |

Start paying off everything at a few dollars a month. Go to the credit agency (yes, you can visit them), explain the problem to them, and ask them for advice and help. Just the visit should help to improve your rating, and if you follow your plan your rating will improve again, even before you have paid all the money back. |

you are not doomed--- start with the smallest balance and get a payment plan with the court since they have a judgment. Pay it off and then work your way up from there |

no you will recover it just takes time. Make payment arrangements on the ones with the judgment's and if you have current debt maintain the min payments. You can dispute the negatives with the credit bureau's even if it's your debt if it is old they probably won't even dispute it and the credit bureau's will update your report so it helps improve your score.
I think we all went a little too crazy when we were young but you can turn it around.
Good luck
BY the way using a consumer credit service is HORRIBLE for your credit almost as bad as bankrupty the way it works is you make payments to them and they then hold the payments and try and get your creditors to take less than is owed so the entire time they are holding payments the creditor is reporting your not paying and then when they do make the settlement it will report on your credit settle for less than owed. DON'T go that route |

You can use credit repair agency, for example this one - http://creditreport.undonet.com
They will clean lots of such bad stuff from your credit report - and do it much faster than yourself, so your credit will go up. |

there are a couple of ways you could start building credit, you could get a small personal loan which you might need a cosigner or the best way will be getting a credit cards, you could get a credit card and use it for your every day expenses but make sure you pay in full at the end of the month that way it will show pay in full everytime the credit card company reports to the credit beuros. At the begining you will only be approved for the lower end credit cards but once you build credit in about 6-9 months you should be able to apply for a better card with better benefits such as free miles or cash back. Check out www.fastcreditcardapprovals.com and go under bad or no credit section and you will find a few choices.

As you have probably already found out, that it takes a long time to build good credit. And a very short time to throw it all away.
The first thing that I recommend you doing is goto http://www.myfico.com and download the free pdf. This pdf will explain in detail the credit reporting process.
Next I would contact your current creditors and see if there is any arrangements that they would make. Possibly suspending your credit line, and interest rate. To allow you to pay down the balances monthly. Arrange for a realistic monthly payment. They will ask for large amounts at first. If the amounts don't seem reasonible, then don't agree to it. In addition, make sure that they agree to report on your credit "paid as agreed".
Then you will need to work on paying down those judgements. If these balances seem like too much, then unfortunately you will need to consider bankruptcy. Otherwise, these judgements will follow you until you die. These can also be transferred onto your home title, if there were anyway that you would purchase a home. They can also have an affect on future employment and apartment rentals.
So consider either trying to get control on your poor spending habits, and negotiate your current balances to be lower. Then work on your judgements, or just file for bankruptcy.
Good luck |

Your best bet is to work with a consumer credit counselor. Be careful with those ones you see advertised on tv. Try to find one that is a non profit.
Editing to add... the non profit consumer credit counseling places operate differently than the for profit places, which is why I recommended going that route. The other poster is correct in his assessment of the for profit places. My husband was on the board of directors for the non profit in our city & that was NOT how they did business. So you just need to ask a lot of questions & go in with your eyes wide open. |
