travel_gal | How do I build credit? |
I'm 23 and I don't have credit (I think). I have debit/atm cards, but I don't think those count. My family always advised me to stay away from credit cards like the plague because of future debt. If I wanted to make any big purchases like plane tickets, I just saved my money. What am I supposed to do if I want to buy a car or a house in the future?
I do have student loans that I'm currently paying off
(but it'll take about 20 years), is that good? |

Yes, student loans are reported on your credit report and count as credit. Paying these on time will give you a good score. If you do want to have one credit card, use it for big purchases only that you've already saved money for, and pay it off when the bill comes to avoid interest. Your parents did good by you, teaching you to save money for the things you want instead of getting over your head in debt.
If you want to buy a car, you can probably get a loan from the bank, or you can just save your money and have enough to pay for the car up front. If you have more than half down for the down payment, anyone will give you a loan for the rest, even if you have no credit (but you do, your student loans). If you manage to save up the whole amount you could take out a loan for six months and pay it off quickly with the money you've saved and that will go on your report as a positive thing.
When you go to buy a house, you'll have the student loans and the car loan on your credit and that should be sufficient. You really don't need a credit card for anything. |

Paying off your loans is a good start. Just make sure that you aren't missing any payments or paying late. An easy way to build credit is to take out a 90-day note from the bank. It's a loan for a small amount that you agree to pay back within 90 days. Instead of using the money, put it in a savings account and use it to pay off the loan before it is due. If you do this a few times it'll help your credit build up. Just be sure that you don't spend the money!!! |

Credit cards aren’t bad, unless you use them to spend money you don’t have. I make the majority of my purchases on credit because of the consumer protection cards provide – I just pay my balances every month.
Student loans will appear on your report so you at least have that much history. Just stay current on the payments because your lender will report delinquencies.
I suggest that you order your three free credit reports from the government website: https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp That will give you an idea of how much history you have. |

You may want to start by checking your credit report and scores. If your score(the middle score is used) is less than 620, with no negative ratings, you may want to get at least 3-4 open credit lines.
If you are responsible you will spend little(10%) and leave no balances, so you dont pay interest.
Make your payment on time before the due date.
Use them, pay them all off and stop using them. |

Yes, student loans are good. Just MAKE SURE u are making on time payments. Credit is established a variety of ways. It will actually tell you all about it at MYFICO.COM under the "learn" tab.
On-time Payments, Length of credit accounts open, How close they are to max. limit, variety of different credit.
All factos of how your credit is determined |

The student loan is a start. You really need to get a credit card (Visa, MC or Discover). Im not saying go and get in debt but use it for small purchases and pay it off the next month. Im a lender and let me tell you how important it is to have at least three lines of credit...i.e. rent, student loan, credit card, cell phone. You have to show that you can handle debt. Be careful how you use it and it will make it easier when time comes to buy that house or car. |

Your student loans are showing on your credit report so make sure you don't miss any payments; make them all on time. You may want to check out your credit on freecreditreport.com to see if you really don't have credit. If you are above 600 you will be fine without making any movements. If it's lower you should consider getting a credit card that you only use for emergencies or to buy gas every couple of months. Make sure it has low interest and keep up with the payments! Try not to just make the minium pay but more if not all! |

You dont have to obsess with the I love debt score.
A low score from not paying your bills is trouble. If you have a 0 score from not borrowing money you can still get an apartment and job and a home loan with manual underwriting. Same low interest rates. It's not a sub prime loan. Its the way i used to be done before the I love debt score.
and it is an I love debt score. You have to borrow money and make payments on time to get a high i love debt score. You have to keep borrowing money and keep making payments on time to keep a high I love debt score.
A cash car is the way to go. It'll get better gas mileage if its not dragging a payment book behind it.
Put what would have been your payments on the car in the bank.
Of course the bankers and their loyal followers on here are gonna tell you different but,
Debt free is the way to be!
No payments = cash in the bank! |

paying student loans builds credit (just make sure you pay it on time) and pay more than the minimum amount due. What you can also try is a secured credit card (capital one for instance). Send them a hundred dollars and they'll see that hundred dollars, so that's the max that card will have on it. Use it...but make sure you pay it off every month... or at least more than the minimum amount...builds your credit rating!@ |
