How do I build good credit???
And what credit cards are the easiest and best for a young college student to apply for ???

Do understand that we students have lot of things to do then just work and go to college right? So, you can always apply for SECURE CARD! For instance go to the bank, ask if they have secured card available, if you want the credit of $1000 then you give them $1000 and they will give u a card worth $1000. It sounds like prepaid card but it is a credit card. Payment from secured card is never OVER WITHDRAWN so there are not FINES and other charges. I have and it has really improved my score since I have to over drawn fees...Good luck

Alot of people will not take a Discover card, but you need to find a card that has a low interest rate, no annual fee, or no interest rate for a year or so... I have a Discover card and I love it because they give you money back for certain things. You can get online at discovercard.com and check it out.. this will really help your credit if you can control yourself and not be late on the payments. It really helps your credit fast.

paying your bills each and every month ON TIME, builds credit. college students can get ANY credit card b/c companies think you're parents will be paying for them. it's hard to do but do NOT get ANY credit cards at all.

To build credit it to take a loan. That could be from a credit card an actual bank loan, or car loan. Your interest rate is going to be high because you have no credit. Bad credit is better than no credit because the leader has a starting place to look at. The best credit card is the one with the lowest interest rate. Your best defense is to learn to live by not chargeing more than you can pay for at the end of the week. Pay off the balance everytime you charge. Not only does that show the lender you are a good lending risk, it helps you avoid extra charges on your card. Say on Monday you charge 100 for clothes and tuesday you charge 34.95 for a book at school. You don't touch you card again and then get a bill for $134.95. You avoided the interst and paid only what you charged. Don't think of a credit card as free money and never pay the minimum. If you pay only the minimum on a card, with interest adding up and the APR it could take you 17 years to pay it off.

Colleges typically have credit card companies set up booths on campus. Wal Mart is probably the easiest of all to obtain, but a Visa or Master Card is more useful.

I do not recommend secured cards because of your initial deposit, low credit limit and fees and the time to get the deposit back.

A Visa or Master Card debit card is very easy to obtain since it draws funds from your checking account.

Most college students today need a car, and many of them make the mistake of tying up all of their credit cards in paying for a car. This is probably the worst possible option for buying a car, since the interest rates will be astronomical that way. It would be much better to get a separate car loan and keep your credit cards free up for things you really need. You can get more information about getting a superb deal on a car loan, where many of these loans would be tailored for college students, at Car Loan Resources.

You need to be honest with yourself – are you and can you be financially responsible with this college student credit card and you are the only one that can answer that. If you are not sure, then perhaps a secured card would be the best place to start. This is where you make a deposit with the card issuer, say a bank or credit union, and then your credit limit is the amount of your deposit. This is actually a great place to start and to learn fiscal responsibility and to get used to getting into the religious habit of paying your credit card bill on time every month, and to understand how the interest can add up, and unfortunately, how late fees can also add up. But it is a lesson that you will learn quickly, and the good news is that you will remember that for the rest of your life. Apply online at: http://www.credit-card-gallery.com/Student_Card.html

If you're a student, you might want to consider a 'student' credit card. You can find a complete list here:

http://www.asapcreditcard.com/student-cards.html

While these cards tend to have higher interest rates than 'standard' credit cards, they give students with little or no income the opportunity to prove their credit worthiness and build their credit score over time. You might also consider a credit card for poor / no credit too, but you'll pay addtional fees to use one of these cards.

Hope this helps. GOOD LUCK!

I received a Citibank credit card back in 1999 while in college. I always paid on time and eventually they raised my limit to $17,000. I love Citibank. They gave me a balance transfer rate of 1.9% until the balance was paid in full. I don't really care about APRs, because if you pay in full every month, it doesn't matter.

to raise credit score

1. Always pay on time or ahead of time.
2. maintain low balances on credit cards
3. keep your total potential debt to earnings load low - If you have a card with a $15000 credit line, you may ask them to reduce it to something more realistic, like $5000.
4. I was told by an underwriter that having just two cards, a major credit card (VISA, MC) and a consumer card (Sears, best buy, etc...) is the best mix for revolving credit.
5. You should have a recent history of both installment or term (Car or house loans) and revolving credit.

I am in college too. I have a Discover card and I love it. I have tried Visa and Mastercards cards but they are just bla, I do not like them. Almost anyone takes Visa or mastercard but not everyone takes Discover. My college does not take Visa cards though because Visa does not accept payments through a third party or something like that. I tried to pay the last bit of my semester cost with my visa and that is what the college guy said. So now I just have a discover card.

It is very important that you DO NOT EVER buy things you do not need with your credit card or else you will end up in heaps of trouble. I only use my credit card for emergencies, like when my car broke and it cost me $500 to fix. I did not have the cash at the time so I had to use my credit card.

Always pay as much as you can off each month. Only get 1 credit card. If you get 2, then you will get 3 and then 4 then 5 then 6...it is hard to stop if that happens. So only get 1 card as long as you are in college.

I'm pretty sure the Green Dot card is best.
It's a prepaid credit card.
You can get them via Rite Aid Pharmacy.
or online.
Google it.
I think it can build good credit, because you never have to worry about paying off what you buy.
