How do I build my credit if I don't have any?
I do not have any credit and would like to build it up. I am a student currently so my student loans will not show up until I graduate. Do I have to wait until then to build my credit. No credit card companies will give me a card. So are there other ways to get my credit started?

Get a "secured" credit card. Basically it works like this. You give them say $200 and they give you a card with a $200 limit. You make small purchases, pay them on time for 6 months to a year. After that everyone will be sending you offers. Be careful. It can get out of control quickly if you don't practice self control.

That is very hard. I am 21 and still have very little credit. I needed a new car and my parents did NOT want to co-sign for me but the salesman basically told them that was they only way I'd get one. They ended up having to put my dad's name on the loan as a primary and hopefully I can refinance it in a few months when I finally have credit of my own!
I also could not get a credit card ( those can ruin it easier than building) and I learned that making late payments on Electric bills, cable, Dr appt invoices all look really bad even if you have no credit.

****Also if you do get a credit card and put some money on it, if you need a loan for something the bank will look at your credit card balance as debt, not good credit so unless there is nothing on it that's not the way to go.

get a bank account. if you have one, get a card through the bank that you deal with. it will likely be low, but it's a start. charge stuff to it, but pay it off right away. if this works, after a year or so, get another credit card through another company. me and my fiancee just bought a house, and i only have one credit card that has 5X the limit of his 2 cards put together and his credit was higher than mine. if this doesn't work, just paying off your student loan will build credit. also big stores like sears and the bay and canadian tire have credit cards you can sign up through them. Good Luck!

You can improve your credit score with knowledge, some time, some effort and not a lot of money. Start by learning the credit laws in the United States the big one thatwill help you is that credit bureaus must respond to disputes in a set amount of time or they have to remove disputed items from your credit report.

Get a copy of your credit report and go over it with a fine tooth comb. Find the inaccuracies; almost every credit report has them. Write letters to the credit bureaus, disputing the inaccurate items. If they can’t prove it’s correct or don’t respond in time, the items must be removed.

Get a gas card, that should be easy to get. You make sure you separate the money that you spend each time you put gas, and pay the statements always on time!

I had the same problem. I got a secured card through my bank and within six months the offers started pouring in - way too many! Just get a secured card, make the payments on time and you'll be building up your credit in no time.

If you have the support of your parents they can help you in several ways (provided they have good credit).

They could put your name on one of their credit card accounts. Your score will then be the same as their score. The credit bureaus froze this option for a while because unscrupulous people were using it to sell others' good credit. But this option is available again.

They could co-sign a loan with you.

Have you tried getting a low limit card from your local bank? If you have a checking account, your bank may be able to get you a card with a $200 limit. Use it and be religious about paying it on time.

Some cell phone companies will have an option where you can build credit through paying your bill on time, if your cell is in your name (e.g. AT&T).

Make sure you check all your credit reports to be safe. You can get them for free through www.annualcreditreport.com. Get a different one every 4 months that way you are checking 3 times per year without having to pay.
