Mimi | How do I cancel my credit card with Citibank? |
I don't understand how or why it is so difficult.
I have this citibank credit card that I signed up for about 5 years ago, I have no idea what security code I used when I signed up. So when I called them to cancel, they told me I couldn't because I wasn't "guessing" the correct security answer. Then I asked if I go to the banking center in person, will they cancel it, and they said yes. I go there in person, and they say that I have to call.
Mind you, I haven't used this card in 2.5 months now. The card itself expired, and they sent me a new one, which I have not activated.
What can I do, who can I speak to. What do I tell them to get them to stop giving me the run around? Anyone who works at a bank, please, please help me out. Additional Details I don't owe anything for the card, as I haven't used it since Ii thought I paid everything off. I only owe finance charges that they claim don't know exactly how much, but will bill me in the near future. It leads me to believe that they are giving me the run around so that these "fees" can continuously build up. |

thats bull. you should be able to cancel it using your social security or drivers license. I would ask to speak to a manager and keep going up the chain of command. Boy that would piss me off |

I have been in banking for quite a while, and any bank (especially right now) should want to provide GOOD customer service. They should be able to verify you over the phone, even if you can't remember the "secret code" you set up so many years ago. If they won't (don't allow them to say "can't", because they can), then demand in the banking center that they ID you, and they personally get you in contact with someone to cancel the account. Usually credit card accounts can not be canceled in the banking center, they have to call. But as a manager and banker, I have placed many clients on the phone after positively identifying them.
GOOD LUCK!! |

You won't be charged for anything as long as there are no charges on the account and you don't activate the card.
You should call again and ask for a manager. |

You may always write a letter to cancel.
Next time you call, ask for a supervisor. Explain your situation and ask for an address to send the "Cut Up" card you just received.
Ask, what additional information you need to send... Such as a copy of your photo id.
Good luck. |

Just cut it in half, put into an envelope and send to the bank with a note: "Account # .... Please cancel." Sign and that's it. Cancellation must be done in writing.
If there is a balance (finance charges or anything else) they'll send the final bill to you. Pay it. Done.
If you dispute those finance charges, you need to tell them in WRITING you disagree and see what they say. |

Call customer service: this is the lost and stolen department, but tell them you want to cancel (even if you have an outstanding balance) and if they say you owe money, just tell them that you want to cancel it anyways and make your payments.

I had a President's Choice Mastercard and I owed over $1,000 but I told them to close my account and I would still make payments. They closed it, I paid it off and the rest is hiostory
As far as the sevurity code goes, that would be the last 3 digits on the back of your card. Tell them you don't have it and that you will answer another security question for them.
They should not keep your card active if you request to have it cancelled and they can ask you some other sort of security questions (Last purchase, drivers licence #, etc.....social insurance/security # if they have it)
If they still will not close your account, then maybe go into the bank itself (with ID) they will have no choice but to close the account
But they should do it over the phone regardless weather you have that stupid PIN number or not, they can ask other security questions |

First, if this card doesn't charge an annual fee, you may want to just keep it open. When you close this account, you will close that 5 year history. If this is your oldest open credit card, that would hurt your score.
Secondly, if you still want to close the account do it via mail. Always close credit card accounts by mail. Use the correspondence address shown on the statement. Ask that they send you written confirmation that the account is closed and 0 balance. Keep your request and the confirmation in your 'forever' financial file. |

Sign in and find your card than that should tell you how to cancel and who to call.

Call them and say you want to cancel. When they ask you for your "magic code" just say "look I can't remember what code I gave you 5 years ago so ask me anything else like my Social Security number" if they object to closing your account ask to speak to the supervisor. You should be all set then. |

A fundi christian may answer, that you should rebuke the demonic powers that have persecuted you and pray for forgiveness for your sins.
A buddhist may answer, that your problem is your perception of reality.
An atheist may answer, that this is a government conspiracy cleverly executed by the Catholic church.
An anti-semite, well we don't want to go there.
As a Gnostic, I would say that the answer is within you.
Seriously, if you call and don't get an answer that works, then you ask that person for their name and to talk to their supervisor and so on....
Good Luck and Live in Peace. |

First, cut the card. Take a pair of scissors and cut it. Then instead of paying the minimum due pay on the credit card, pay more so you can end the card charges on it. Then, once it's all payed off, go in and cancel it.
As consumers in today's society, you have to stand up for yourself so your not being pushed around. Go in and tell them you want to cancel. If they say you have to call, tell them they told you to come in. They can just as easily cancel in person as they can on the phone. Take charge!
