Erica D | How do I get a utility company to remove a debt that was paid off my credit report? |
|
|

SPIFIMAN1
 |
You can't.
That is why they call it credit history.
Derogatory accounts show on your credit report for 7-years form the date of first delinquency.
The reason for this is so lenders in the future can see that you did not pay as agreed. |

Paid debits AREN'T removed from a credit report. They are a negative item that show you failed to pay, and reflect the current status of paid.
That's why it's a crtedit REPORT. |
|

LYNN T
 |
You don't dear.
Like Spifiman1 said, that's why they call it credit history. |
|

Just because you paid it doesnt mean it gets removed.
Your credit (whats on the report) generally stays for 7 years. |
|

 |
Spifiman1 is correct, you don't. |

You can dispute anything that is on your credit report. If the utility company does not substantiate the debt within 30 days, then it is automatically taken off by law.
If there is anything questionable on your credit report always dispute it. |

Begging might belp, but doubtful. They don't have to take it off. They can report it as paid, but paid late. Hence it still hurts your credit a bit. |
|

Lost in thought
 |
first you would have to contact that company tell them that the debt was paid off. the should handle it from there.
*note - it will say on your credit report as a "closed delinquent account" instead of an "open delinquent account" |

all they will do is report it as paid if you were late and then paid it. If something else happened, contact them and explain and ask them to remove it. If they don't, contact the credit bureaus and protest their reporting. Expect to need some evidence that you were improperly reported though, as the bureaus can't just remove everything that is protested, or everyone would protest everything.
One late payment with a utility company will not be a huge deal on your report, as a practical matter, so manage your time and energy appropriately. But if they show a delinquent or collections debt that is unresolved, it is worth you trying to get that cleared. |

contact the credit report company. |

I think it would be easier to contact the credit report and ask them to remove it. |
