How do I get out of credit card debt?
I am 28 yrs old and have $7,000 worth of credit card debt. I am a teacher and make about 2,100 a month. I have a car note of 565.00 per month for another 3yrs. I have a cell phone bill of about 120.00 per month. I give my mother 103.00 per month in bills. I have no children. I want to move and get my credit card bills down. Please help me. I pay my bills on time monthly, but only 20.00 over the min of the credit card debt. That 7,000 is split onto 2 different cards. Do you see a light at the end of my tunnel?

yes, you have to live within your means. You do not need to have a car payment of 565.00 a month, you need one 350.00 or under, you need to downgrade your phone plan, around 65.00 a month. Also, contact your credit card companies and ask about interest free for 6-12 months to help get out of debt. If that doesn't work, request a loan from your bank and pay off your credit cards. A loan you can get for around 4.5% your payments would be about $220 a month and if you downgrade in other areas of your life like i mentioned, then you would actually be saving money and you would have no more credit card debt

It's not up to me or any of us to tell you how to spend your money but unless you develop a plan, the light at the end of the tunnel is going to be a train if something happens to your job or health. It sounds like you're in a car that's too expensive for your budget and what's with the cell phone bill??? Again, it's not my place to budget you but you should evalulate your style of living to reduce your costs or increase your income with part-time tutoring or a business that can help you get those debts paid off. You really should start to save if you want to get out on your own and be realistic about what kind of expenses you are going to have... rent, heat, electric, phone, cable, internet, food, transportation, etc. Can you afford it if you are only paying $103 for housing costs now? What on earth did you blow $7,000 on? You didn't get in debt overnight so you won't get out overnight either but that plan that I mentioned has got to be put into place if you ever expect to get out of the situation you're in. I would consider downsizing the car and getting rid of the cell phone. I would look into a bill consolidation loan to have ONE payment on the credit cards at a lower interest rate for 3, 4, or 5 years and pay that loan off the top. Do not consider using those cards again. If you cannot pay cash for what you want, you cannot afford it. It sounds like you are setting yourself up to fail. As a teacher, you are smart enough to know what you've done wrong and how to avoid it turning into a train wreck. It's important to prioritize what you want, need and can and cannot afford. Your future depends on it. In this economy it makes no sense to have a $120 a month cell phone bill unless you're a drug dealer. (Grin... sorry, had to say that). Be honest with yourself. Devise a plan using your resources to get that debt paid off so you can afford the finer things in life without owing on them for the rest of your life. Only you can help yourself. Check out the books in your library by Dave Ramsey. If you live like nobody else you will be able to live like nobody else. Think about it. The good news is you are young and have time on your side.

First, cut your expenses.
Sell the car, pay off the car loan, and buy an old car with cash.
Next, look for a discount cell phone plan, such as Cricket or Metro PCS ($45/month unlimited)

Second, Make a detailed written budget.

$2100 income
$100 food
$600 rent
$565 car note
$50 car insurance
$50 clothes
$103 utility bills
$120 cell phone
$512 to visa.

Get a cheaper cell phone plan or keep doing what you are doing until the car is paid off. Once you own your car you can buy cheaper insurance and use the "car payment" to pay off the credit cards.

The important thing is to stop using the Credit Cards altogether and start making higher payments towards the balance... Even another $20 on top of what you are paying will help.

But honestly... pay off your car then use the extra money to pay off the credit cards. There is never a fast, quick way to get out of too much debt but when you have a plan you will at least know when you will see "the light at the end of the tunnel".

For now it is a long, dark tunnel but in 3 years you should see the first glimmer of light... :)

Yes, consolidate them all into either a low interest loan, or put them all onto one card, that way all your interest will accrue on one amount monthly instead of three. Sometimes a little extra each month is all it takes, after a while, you will see a difference. You can also call the credit card company and ask them to reduce your interest rate. Most will as long as you have made timely payments, all you have to do is call and ask.

Talk to someone at Consumer Credit Counselling for advice, or get a second job to have more money to pay down the credit card bills.
