How do I get out of credit card debt when debt collectors are after me?

Try your best to pay off as much of it as you can. Sell whatever stuff you have that you don't really need, see if you can get a 0% interest loan from a good friend, try to cut down on unnecessary expenses, and do whatever you need to do to cut your debt down as much as possible. I will be keeping up with this question because my credit card bills have gotten quite large also. Good luck.

Let me preface this by saying I work for a collections agency but I am NOT a bill collector (I do IT work).

If there is one good thing about your credit card debt going to a collections agency it is that interest is no longer accruing at outlandish rates. With that said, you have a couple options for paying it off: you can setup a stream of payments (usually the minimum is around $50/month depending on the situation) or you can settle in full for an amount less than the outstanding balance. I have seen them accept as low as 40% of the outstanding balance depending on how high it was to begin with. If you don't have a huge balance you can probably get them to knock 20-25% off of it. Remember, collectors want to get any money badly and they will gladly work with you to get something over nothing.

Hope this helps.

You are going to get quite a few answers here on how to correct your credit issues. I think you should look at all the answers here and make an informed decision on which to use. What I have learned is that you need a starting point so, you'll need to spend a little money on a 3 in 1 credit report so that you can do just that. Then print up a form letter advising those collectors that are after you that they may only contact you by mail...have the letter notarized. This will help you relax a bit. Lastly, may I suggest a web site that can help you repair your credit http://www.thecreditrepairmanual.com

Best of luck,

Talk to a reputable credit counseling company. Check the BBB on them. There are good companies out there that can really help. Be careful about doing settlements. they stay on your credit for 7-10 years depending on your state. Creditors view them just as negatively as bankruptcy. and any amount the creditor 'forgives" you will have to pay taxes on. The IRS considers the "forgiven" amount as taxable income. Do not refinance your house to pay off the credit cards. you will just be trading unsecured debt for secured and that is hardly ever a good option

stop using your cards and pay your bills

tell them what you can pay and stick to it. They'll accept the fact that you're willing to pay something. It will take time but, pay it off and get your credit back on track. If you let it go, it will catch up to you.

You should opt for credit card debt consolidation:

Consolidation is the best solution available to the credit cardholders to improve their future credit. People go for debt consolidation for many reasons: prolonging the loan period from 5 - 15 years and reducing the interest rate. Consolidation allows you to go for a loan with lower interest rate than the one you are currently paying. Besides it simplifies the loan repayment as you are paying only one lender in place of various payments to different lenders.

its easy man just pay what you can afford to pay the credit card companys. just make sure you would have enough in the bank in order to make the payments and to support yourself. and if the credit rate is high then just pay piece by piece little by little or big by big.and set a limit on your credit cards and use them when your desperate or in case of emergency.

Commence your own debt management strategies and put them into action. This way the debt collectors must back off. My profile under debt has information for this.
