How do I get rid of credit card debt?
I'm about $3000 in credit card debt, mostly because I'm a college student and I only make about $600 a month where I work...sometimes a little less because I also have insurance through my job.

Plus, I have to pay my grandparents $300 a month for my car, so there goes half my income. I'm really upset about all this debt and I really need to save money so I can move and transfer to a university next year.

I have about $1200 saved up but I think it may be a better idea to pay some of my bills with it.

What's the best way to pay off all these credit card balances and still be able to save some money?

may i suggest a second job? i know ur in school but u have 2 choices...well 3 [1] you can use SOME of that money like pay ur oldest bills or the bills that mess up ur credit the most...like the highest ones! [2] you can get the second job or [3] you can find a better paying job, well then theres [4] use the other half of ur income to also pay off bills..if u live with someone and dont pay rent or anything besides the car note then theres ur opportunity!

and honestly you wont beable save a dime unless you get a better job or a second job ;D

I don't know if you know or not but there are special programs for student credit card debt consolidation through which you can consolidate your debts. Wherein a credit counselor would talk with your creditors and negotiate with them for either reducing your interest rate or reducing the total amount upto certain percent.
Then based upon the total reduced debts they would provide you with an affordable debt management plan..

Here is the name of a debt consolidation company named http://ezconsolidation.com for your reference.

In my opinion, you should just try and manage your money as well as you can for right now, then pay most of it when you get out of college. Because the bottom line is this: 300 dollars a month isn't enough to live on, let alone get ahead.

If you can possibly avoid it, DO NOT file bankruptcy as someone has suggested. That stays on your record for ten years. You'll have a difficult time obtaining ANY credit with a bankruptcy on your record. You may even have a difficult time obtaining a decent job upon graduation.

Struggle on a second job for a year or two, and you'll be home free, provided you use the extra money to pay off your debts.

You can get rid of your credit card simply by sending a signed request to the credit card company to cancel the card immediately. If you can pay it off, either in a lump sum, or in payments, it's probably best if you keep it and don't use it at all until you get it completely paid off.

You can also phone the credit card company and ask for a reduction in the percentage of interest you pay. If they grant it, that will help you to pay it off quicker.

I do suggest, as someone else has, that you see about obtaining another job, either full time or part time. I hate to remind you, but you got yourself into this situation. You'll have to get yourself out. It will probably mean some sacrifices on your part, including sacrificing your "off time" so you can work somewhere else to earn some money to pay off the credit card..

Working hard and paying it!
You can file for bankruptcy if you want. Ask a lawyer!

Steps
1) Cut up the cards today
2) If you have more than one account, pay off the smallest balance first while paying the minimum on all the rest
3) Continue paying as much as possible towards the debt snowball until it is paid in full.

Give back the car to your grandparents and stop paying them half your income. Either get a less expensive car or make due without a car.

What I would do...

1.) Try to avoid debt. Having just graduated college myself I know this is not always possible.

2.) If you are still in school and need money, you could take out a student loan and use the money to pay off the credit card debt. The payments will be much lower, rates are better, and most will let you defer payment until 6 months after you graduate (interest will still accrue though so keep that in mind).

Credit cards will rape you will interest and fees. Pretty much anything except a payday-advance would be better. Use your savings if you need to because I guarentee they are charging you a higher rate of interest than you could possibly earn in your savings.

Bottom line: do whatever you can to get rid of the credit card debt (student loan, savings, etc..)

Hi,

I guess part of the answer would depend on whether you accumulated the $3000.00 in debt while you were saving the $1200.

I mean if you are putting things on credit instead of paying cash so that you can put some money in savings, obviously that won't work.

Take the $1200. and pay down your credit card (just one card right?) then pay off the card as quickly as possible, you don't say where you are living and if or how much you may be paying to live someplace.

After you get rid of the debt, save as much per paycheck as you can. When will you have the car paid off?

The interest you are paying on the credit card debt, is much more than you'd be earning in a savings account, so getting rid of that first is priority.

Getting a second job until school starts up again would be a good idea, I realize it will make your summer less enjoyable but you'll be more at ease with your finances straight.

Good Luck

You might think of going to a credit consolidation company, they`ll take all of your bills and consolidate them into one payment.
