How do I improve my credit rating?
I have quite a low credit rating (at 580 or so, it is considered "poor") and want to fix it. I have several items, collections and not, that I am currently paying off, although I am unemployed currently and am able only to pay small bits.

Also, I have one credit card with a small limit (500$) What tricks or tips can I use to help me improve my score? I am job hunting and knowing that employers may check my credit score before hiring me makes me uneasy!

Paying off your debt is the best way to improve your credit score. You should make this your primary goal until your debt is gone.
Yes, some employers may check your score, but most probably won't, unless the job involves dealing with money.

Call the American Consumer Counseling Center - unlike a lot of those "debt solution" places, this is a non-profit and won't take your money. They can give you some great counseling and advise you on the best options for your particular situation.

Also, get down to your local library tonight and start checking out personal finance books - they can be wonderfully empowering and inspiring, and most are written in simple, easy-to-understand terms.

The only trick is get a job, then pay off those outstanding balances you have, then start paying your bills and pay them on time.

Affordable credit repair. Usually companies charge hundreds of dollars to simply pull your credit and send correctly worded dispute letters—this is the key…..people will tell you that you can do this yourself for free but the truth of the matter is that the credit bureaus will throw your letters away or simply reject them. There is an easy to use online kit that will deliver the results you want available for just $19.95 at the source website. A similar kit is being sold via infomercials and radio talk shows for seventy dollars more but they try to solicit you repeatedly for other services after the fact.

Stop with the credit cards until you have everything out of the collections eye!! Pay off everyone you owe!..Then buy a shirt at the mall, 25.00 on the card, wait for the bill , pay the bill, dont let it fall behind, and whatever you do..dont not just pay !! Its very important to have good credit!! keep it up!! good luck!

Depending on the type of work you're looking for, you probably don't need to worry too much about employers checking your credit. That's unless you're trying to get a job in the finance or insurance industry.

There's no fast way to improve your credit rating. The situation you describe is an income problem. You need income to pay off those debts faster. Once you become debt free, your credit rating will gradually improve as the late pays get older and no new ones are getting added.

The collection accounts are what are killing your score. Until you have those taken care of you will not see much improvement.

You first should see if you are legally required to pay the debt. There is the Statute of Limitiations. This is the time after which creditors can not come after you to sue you. Depending on the type of debt and state this will run in the 3-8 year range. This time starts from the date of your last delinquency. The other time is the time it can be reported on your credit report. It can only be reported for 7 years from the date of delinquency. After that time it no longer appears on your report, but they can still continue to try and get you to pay until the debt is paid off.

However, if you are looking for a job and want to get back on track you may not be able to wait these times out. First when talking to the Collection Agencies be sure to get any agrement in writting before you send money or give them any account information. If you do not have an agreement, they could come back to you later and say you owe more money. Ideally you can try to negociate with them to remove the negative information if you pay it in full, if they don't do that you may be able to get them to settle for less.

As for the credit card you need to keep this below 30% of the balance so that would mean that you don't want to use more than $150 on the card. You also need to pay it on-time every month. Again though until you take care of the collection any positive effect this credit card has is offset by the collection accounts.

Depending on the type of job you are looking for, a lot of employers do not actually look at credit scores before hiring you. So unless you are going for a job that deals with financials or banking, you may not need to worry about this as much as you think.

Follow these simple guidelines to help restore and improve your credit score.

First, make sure all the information on your credit report is accurate.

Second, try to pay off all or any accounts that are currently in collections or make payment arrangements with the creditor to pay off the balance monthly.

Third, any credit card that is over 50% of the available credit line should be paid down to under half of your total credit line. Your credit score is lowered when your available balance is over 50% of your total credit line.

Finally, if you have bad or no credit and have no credit cards try to obtain two credit cards and make sure all of your monthly payments are made on time. This will help increase your credit score. If you cannot be approved for a unsecured credit card, obtain a secured credit card.

Repairing your credit and improving your credit score is a slow process that takes time.

I dont think employers check your credit. When your put your social downon a application for a job, they do a back ground check to see if you have ever been arrested or if your a convicted felon. They dont ever check your credit thats too personal.
