How do I pick a good bank?
I'm in a federal credit union and they keep taking my money. I'm paying over $32 in over draft fees when I supposedly have overdraft protection. Half of the time, when I am overdraft, I should not be. I check my balances before I use my card. Does this mean that the transfers are taking a long time to be posted? I hate my bank, they're making me poor. Over $600 reduced to $313 and I haven't been spending anywhere CLOSE to that much. Any websites to help me figure out where to take my business? Or am I completely wrong and what they are doing is ok??? I cannot believe it would be ok, but I could be wrong. Thanks

Here are some tips on picking a good bank:
1. If you like to visit the branch, try to find one that's near where you work or live or at least pass by. If you use ATMs or point-of-sale in stores alot, then the branch location doesn't really matter. However, if you need service from live people, you need to find one that has easily accessible employees.
2. The smaller local banks almost always are tops in service. Look for a mutually-owned (vs. stockholder-owned) bank...not too many of them left, but there are some. These banks don't have to answer to their stockholders where the stock price is the overriding decision-maker of all things. You'll find these banks have good employees who have left the bigger banks after they've merged or been acquired.
3. What's most important to you? Higher deposit rates, lower mortgage/loan rates, free ATM use, free checking (all banks have this, but watch for loopholes)? Zero in on your local bank that offers what's most important to you.
4. As far as your overdraft fees, you're getting charged for what's called "uncollected" funds, or monies you've deposited that your bank hasn't yet "collected" or been paid for from the bank upon which your deposited check is drawn. Ask the bank "how many days until my funds are considered collected?" Smaller banks will typically give you collected funds in one day. Bigger banks clear checks through several channels and often will "hold" your money for up to 5 days. This is important, so ask the question. You'll find many variances among banks.
Good luck!

Even if you are checking you balance if you are using an ATM the will show your total balance that you can take not how much you have before overdraft. The best thing to do is to wait while a couple of your deposits go in and see what your over draft is. If you want a different bank TD has a special right now where they are giving IPods away to people who switch their banking to them so you might want to check them out. But if you want a bank with really high interest my suggestion would be ING the have a 2.5 daily compression right now so your money grows really fast

i have been going to commerce for the last 3 years and i love it there. the rates are great and the hours are wonderful. the are open 7 days a week including Sunday. i guess it depends on where you are from though. anyway you can check out commerce banking and their online banking at commercebank.com. i hope this helped and good luck

If u were thinking of savings i would go with an online bank such as ING Direct or Citibank, These guys are offering 4.25% and 4,75% interest respectively.

www.citibank.com

You can find other bank information at www.bankrate.com

What city/state are you near? Repost more details to your question please.

Citibank is the best IMHO! Great online banking and billpay. But yes, fees if you are under a certain balance, maybe $2000. They also charge to print checks.

I have found that if the bank is local to your area and not a national bank, you would be better to bank with them. We have several local banks in the Buffalo, NY area, so I would think all areas have the same.

Stay away from HSBC if you have it in your area. The calls are transferred to a different country. The Reps are so hard to understand and they don't seem to understand us either.

I bank in two different banks. I went with a larger, corporate bank for one account and a small locally owned bank for the other. I have found that living in a small town, the smaller bank has much better service and they are much quicker in helping to resolve problems than the larger bank. I would go to a nearby smaller community (if you live in a big town) and find a smaller bank with the things you need.

Find one with little security and a clear escape route. Make sure you wear your mask and spray the camera. Good luck and try not to shoot anyone

I work in a credit union, and I know it does take a while for transfers to take place. You need to check your balances in the credit union to get your actual balance, because you can't really count on the internet or the atm to be the right balance. I agree with you that it is riduculous to keep paying fees but its not an overdraft fee it is a non-sufficient funds fee. If you have any other questions about your account I would talk to someone in the credit union that can set you straight
