How do I protect my unborn child's credit from his irresponsible dad and grandad who have the same full name?
My husband John Smith II had his credit ruined by his father John Smith I. I am pregnant with a boy now and want to name him John Smith III but don't want the same thing to happen to my child. What can I do to secure my child's financial future from misuse by John I and John II?
Additional Details
If the father or grandfather knows the SS# the identity is at risk.

The name is a traditional name and this is something we planned on doing before we found out about my husband's father doing this to my husband's credit.

The easy way is to not name your new baby John Smith the anything"th". Just pick a different name. Since there will not be the same name, and will be a different SSN, no problem.

Put an statement in his credit report with the bureaus: I am John Smith, my birthdate is xxxx, please verify this information before granting any credit.

Your childs Soc. Sec. # will dictate his credit ratings. However, when the name is that common he will have to be even more alert and check his credit more often to be certain there aren't inaccuracies on his report. Mistakes happen on credit reports. Luckily the 3 (and soon to be 4) bureaus put more weight on you (and your son), than they do on the debtors when it comes to resolving desputes.

Also you can have certain mechanisms put in place by the bureaus which will make them alert you of any changes on the report. If you keep that same, common name I urge you to contact the bureaus and do this.

Your son will have a totally seperate identity from his father and grand father. Their credit will not affect your son's in any way.

Has nothing to do with a name. Credit is based on Social Security Numbers.

My brother is "John Smith IV" Credit is linked to SS#. Keep it confidential. Even still. they have to watch the credit reports on a regular basis to keep them strait. Report any errors quickly.

Why don't you guys think of another name? That would be so much easier, but if you guys are stuck on this name, it's your call. He'll had a totally different social security number, so that's the good thing.

The name is not your problem. I'm a III and my son is the IV and we have never had any problems. Your problem is Identity theft. Just keep you child's ssn secure. Relax there are a lot things you can do at this point to avoid this from occurring again.

Keep the tradition going!!

i suggest that you either give him a middle initial or give him a different name. Also, let the bureaus know that his father and grandfather both have the same name, but different dob and ss number. You want no errors. Also send them something in writing that can be placed in the file so that it can be seen if someone tries to apply for credit in his name. Also get some counseling for those guys so that it does not become a family curse or legacy.

name him John Smith but use a completely different middle name and possibly change the spelling of John to Jon or something like that....even tho the SS# will be diff this can open up a can of worms...think 2x before using this exact same name.

Chuck
easliy change It
have good credit !
or a different name !
