How do I stop bill collectors from calling my job?
I am disabled and limited income. About 4 or 5 years ago I got this credit card and hit hard times and I can't make the payments right now. Because of the hard times I ran into I am having to work a parttime job and they are calling my work place what can I do? Please help quick!

Read the portion of text below from the Fair Debt Collections Act.

All you have to do is send the collection agency a letter saying you are not allowed to get calls at work. Send the letter by certified mail, return receipt.

If, after they receive this letter, they call you again, then get proof of the call (witness, call logs, etc...) and trot down to the small claims court and file a lawsuit for $1000. You will easily win.

Contact me if you need more help.

(don't you love the idiots with their "pay your bills" answers....sheesh!)

I used to be a collector and depending what state you live in I believe you submit it in writing to the company calling you telling them you do not wish to be contacted at work. Sometimes they required another # but if they keep calling after you have submitted it in writing by law you can have a judgment and have the bill thrown out. Sometimes just telling them not to contact you at work follows the fair debt credit act and they can not contact you after you tell them on the phone check will the laws that apply to your state.

Tell them to stop calling you at your place of employment. Tell them that personal calls are not allowed, and too many violations will cost you your job. They don't want you fired, or you can't pay them...
Also, under the fair debt collection practices act they are not supposed to call you at a work or reference number if they are asked not to. As long as they have an alternate number to reach you on, you have every right to demand that they stop calling the job.
If they continue to do so, let them know that you are aware of your rights and would rather pay a lawyer to sue them for harassment than pay someone who does not respect your wishes.

Try talking to credit counselor.....there are lots of them that offer free service, they will talk to your creditors and negotiate a low monthly payment and keep them from harassing you at work....

Easy. Pay them. Atleast pick up the phone and try to make an arrangement with them to pay, even if its 10 dollars here and there!

I believe people are right here. They are not allowed to call you on the job. Neither are they allowed to call you after 8PM at your home. Make some kind of payment arrangement. Even if it is only $10 a month if you send it regularly, they have to accept it and stop calling you.

spartexcites
they are not aloud to call you at work ... you must tell them to stop or you will take this up in court.

KEY WORD: WRITING. Make sure all corespondence is NOT by phone and is by CERTIFIED mail instead. Imbed that into your brains people, stop using the phone, you can't prove what someone said without getting their permission to record their phone conversation with you.

The next time they call tell them, "I can't talk about this right now, I'm at work. Please call me at _________ (your home phone number) between the hours of _____ and _____. Please do not call me at work any more. Thank you." You have to give them another number where you can be reached, and tell them not to call you place of employment. If they can't reach you at the number you provided then they can legally call you at work again.

IWIU
Just tell them to stop.

It's the law, they have to stop once you tell them too.

Then report them, if they continue to call.

tell them to put you on the do not call list.. once done legally they can not call you or it could be considered harrassment.

blossombaby84
Try to make the payment as it will stop their calls and most importantly you will be saved from taking a bigger hit on your own credit ratings. If you cannot make payments, tell them to stop calling you. You can record their calls and approach a lawyer. Try to avoid this as it will affect your credit rating badly and it would be very difficult to procure any personal loan, home loan or even a credit card in future.

The best way to stop bill collector's coming to your job would be to actually pay your bills, then they would have no reason to annoy you again.

When you pick the phone up you have to be super firm with them, they cant do anything, its all scare tactics. Just tell them, 'it is illegal for you to be calling my work, please do not call this number anymore!" if they continue to do so, you can get them in trouble... as it is actually illegal to call you at work. Hope that helps!
