there are two ways you could start credit one or them is taking out a small personal loan which you might need a parent or an adult to co-sign for you meaning if you do not pay the loan they will. Or you could apply for a credit card for bad or no credit which most likely will get you approved no matter what, but if you are a student you could get a student credit card which will offer you lower rates and no annual fees, check out www.fastcreditcardapprovals.com and go under bad or no credit or student cards. good luck

Two things you must have.
A job for 6 months and a checking account for a few months.
After that time your bank might issue you a visa attached to your checking - just ask after 6 months.

Borrowing against a cd will not show up on your credit report.

You can get a secured credit card. Capital One and Bank Of America offer them with low security.

apply for credit cards and pay the on time

In today's market it's harder than ever to get credit so I think it will be difficult for you especially if you are young and haven't been on a job for any length of time.
When I was in my 20's I applied for a Sears card because I worked there. I was turned down so I tried again and then I got one.
Once I got the card, I bought something with it and then paid it off when I got paid which was before the due date. Then I did it again and again and before I knew it I had good credit.
Maybe if you have a cell phone and you pay you bills on time a credit card company can use that history to give you a small credit to start off with.

Credit unions are like that. Usually, the only way to get an account there if you don't have credit is if your parents have an account there.
You'll probably want to start with getting a regular checking account since you'll need it to make payments. Most credit card companies will actually jump at the chance to issue cards to 18-year-olds. If you are at least 18, look online for credit card applications. Look for something that has no fees attached (annual, account maintenance, application, account initiation, that sort of thing). Also, don't agree to more than 18% APR. It may be a good idea to ask your parents for some help with this.
Once you've found one that looks good, go ahead and apply. It's probably better if you do the paper application rather than online. You should get approved for about $300 - 500. Once you have the card, spend a small amount of money and then immediately send a check to the credit card company. The idea here is to NOT pay the interest. To avoid paying interest, assuming you didn't get one of those interest free introductory offers, you need to pay the full balance BEFORE you get the statement.
Keep doing this. You can also do other things like getting a cell phone in your name or getting cable in your name.
Whatever you do, make sure you always pay your bill in full and on time.

Credit is calculated in a complex way.

Some of the factors used are:
1. Income to debt ratio
2. Amount of credit available
3. Length of credit history
4. Standing with credit issuers.

There are more but those are the big ones.

IMO, the best thing for a young person starting out to do would be.

Get a savings plan started and make regular contributions to that. Even as little as $10/week will help to develop a pattern of savings.

Then get a credit card from a major issuing bank. Wells Fargo, Capital One etc...Keep the card for emergencies only. Do not use it.

When credit is checked the score will be based on your available assets and credit score. The credit agencies like to see the length that credit has been available to you and if you use it and pay things back.

Just my $.02

-Pay all bills on time.
-Put utilities in your name.
-Apply for a card at a local store that you normally shop at (Sears, WalMart, Best Buy, Macy's, Citgo, Mobil, etc.). These accounts are easier to get approved for than Visa or Mastercard. If you can't get approved, see if a relative or significant other would be willing to co-sign with you. Then buy something that you can afford to pay back right away, and as soon as you get the bill in the mail pay it in full. Keep doing this over and over, little by little. Just charge a bit at a time and pay it back in full when you get the bill.

Get a credit card from local bank and pay it in time. You also can use this service to avoid common mistakes while buiding credit and pre-estimate future scores for different scenarios of payments. - freecreditreport.hotusa.org

The easiest way is to go to a bank (not a credit union) and Buy a $500.00 certificate of deposit, then borrow $400.00 against the CD as a signature loan, then just pay it off as needed. That will build your credit, its inexpensive, and almost any bank will do it.
