First, get a social security number. With that you can open a bank account. Also get a drivers license which will serve as an identification document. You do not want to carry your passport all the time. Then apply for a store credit card or gas station credit card. Pay off your bills on time. You might also want to get a loan from your bank using your deposit as your collateral. Do not spend the money. Set it aside. After two to three months pay off the loan. That will start the build-up of a good credit rating. |

Get a "secured credit card".
Credit cards are a fact of life.
You need one to make a hotel or plane reservation, or to rent a car, even if you plan to pay cash. Many stores require a credit card to accept your check. Responsible use of a credit card builds a good credit rating, too, marking the owner as mortgage-worthy.
But people who have never had credit or need to repair a poor credit history may not qualify for a regular credit card. For them, a secured credit card may be the only way to establish, or re-establish, credit. |

The best way to establish credit is to open up a bank account. The bank will give you a debit card which comes straight out of your checking account. They may also allow you to apply for their own credit card. If you can pay off the card every month, your credit score should go up. Then you can start applying for credit cards that give you points or mileage.
I don't know if the credit rating from the UK carries over to the US. Talk to a bank manager about that. |

It is difficult to establish credit. As long as you have Social Security Number it is possible. What you need are cards that are specifically designed to building credit that require an
1. annual fee,
2. co-sign with a member of your family,
3. or Prepaid credit cards that have an intro fee and monthly fee around $5. |
