Your gf prolly got one w/her name printed on it, but on her parents' acct. At any rate, credit cards are only good for one thing: Going into DEBT! I assure you, I have been in debt, & it completely sucks in ways you cannot even imagine at 14 y/o. What you should be concerned about is learning how to earn & manage MONEY. I have had credit (aka debt) & money, money is sooooooooooo much better. Please read the book below before you go & do something ridiculous:

Not only are you too young but you should learn something about financial responsibility BEFORE getting a credit card.
Here's the first thing you should know. NEVER, NEVER, NEVER put a girlfriend as co-owner or authorized user of a credit card. it only leads to very, very bad things!!! |

In the United States you have to be eighteen to legally contract for anything, including a credit card. You can however, get a card from your parent or parents, as an authorized user. You may still have a hard time getting retail stores to accept it, but if your parent is with you initially and explains to the merchant and that make a note of it you shouldn't have any problem. |

Unfortunately, you are not legally old enough to obtain a credit card. Wait a few more years, finish school, save your money and then try to establish credit. It sounds like you are wanting to impress this girlfriend of yours and the best way to impress her is to be yourself and please her with random acts of kindness such as opening the door for her or giving her freshly picked wild flowers. Don't get yourself into debt in the process. |

legally, you cant. The only way you can have a card is as an authorized user, where someone adds you to the account as one. You have no legal obligations, you do not get credit history, can be removed or added at anytime. but legally, you cant have your own credit card account, nor can you co-sign for one. Sorry.
edit: yes. They would apply, it would be on their credit, and they would be legally responsible. The bill would come in their name, but you would have a card in your name, be able to use it, make payments, get information about charges, do a dispute if needed. |

I suppose that if you could show that you had assets that you could pledge for collateral & you were a competent adult You would have no trouble getting a credit card
If you are an adult, you just have to show that you have a paying job.
As child you are not completely responsible for your actions.
So if they granted you a card you could just say that you didn't want to pay & there isn't much they could do.
So how do they get around that?
Well they just won't give you credit in the first place. Or you have to find an adult that will sign for you. |

Unless you are immancipated and bringing in your own income, I don't think you can. The only option is to be an additional card holder on your parent or guardians credit card account.
But why would you want one? Credit cards are one of the main reasons why young people end up filing for BK, have their secured items reposessed, etc. Well actually the young person who has the credit card. Life is tough enough without adding additional and unnecessary responsibilities and worries to your life.
If there is a one in a million chance you got one, if you couldn't pay, who do you think will pay for it? Your parents would probably have to foot the bill and their credit ruined.
Having credit is not a hobby or latest fad. It is a serious contract that has serious consequences if you do not pay according to what you agreed to. |

You legally cannot get your own card. Your GF probably got an authorized user card from her mom and dad. If she has one in her own name with out her mom and dad she is breaking the law.
If you want one talk to your parents...until you are 18 you cannot get one on your own. |

Open a checking account and get a Debit card.
Wait until your older to be screwed by the credit card companies.
And don't be in such a hurry to add authorized users. You could really get screwed if the relationship went sour (Not that it ever will I'm sure). |
